Default Please help with a '31 door latch

We're in the process of re-installing the door latches on my '31 coupe after painting. There is a small U shaped spring on the side of the latch (faces rearward) which only wants to fit outside the door frame, but Bratton's catalog, and logic seem to indicate it should fit inside the frame. But, I don't know how to fit in the latch through the existing openings and still get the little 1/4" u spring to fit inside. Please help, and be as detailed as possible.

I think the latch I am referring to is #A46105B.

Many thanks.

The spring acts like it wants to stay on the outside but you just use a screwdriver or simular tool to "Help" the spring to go inside the hole in the door as you fit the latch in place. For some reason, how this is designed seems to me something was missed, but this is the way it is. Once in place, the spring works as it should.
