59a flywheel resurface Q......
How much can you resurface 59a flywheel, when is it to much?
Grateful if anyone has any measure! Thanks, Jorgen |

Re: 59a flywheel resurface Q......
I know this isn't going to be real useful, my answer is a lot... I have a distant memory that you can take them down to 30 lb. I believe that they're about 40 lb, to start.
MY question is why- do you want to lighten for fast reving? I have resurfaced a bunch of these, I've never found one to have much run out at all. If you're trying to cut out heat checks, it (heat checks) won't make any functional difference. Make sure that the flywheel is smooth... I don't like the grinding type of flywheel resurfacer for the fact that it leaves a course surface... Doing them on a brake drum lathe leaves too much room for inaccuracy. My favorite is the Van Norman 570 (rotary broach)... The set up is fast and accurate, uses a tool cut then a grinder for surface finish... Takes down hard spots perfectly... Not a very fast machine, though. Karl Last edited by Karl Wolf; 04-04-2014 at 05:41 PM. |

Sorry Karl, I was not clear enough! I just want to remove the unevenness made from clutch disc.
Thanks, Jorgen |

In that case, pretty much any amount you want, They don't get much out of true, I've probably removed .020" to clean a worn surface... I don't think that I've ever seen ditches from rivets on a flathead flywheel... They do cup a little but not much... Karl |

Re: 59a flywheel resurface Q......
The only problem with grinding the clutch surface to much is the flywheel bolts that hole the wheel to the crank will hit the springs in the clutch disc. I've had to thin the heads of the bolts. I've had wheels lightened to 20# or more for stock car engines, but you have to have the meat taken off the back of the wheel. Walt

With that style wheel I always chop that outside lip right off, haveing it surfaced in a lathe you want to make sure you check for run out once you bolt it to the crank. Walt

I would balance the clutch, flywheel and disc as a unit as long as you have it out.
