Default Cam lube question ...

Is it wrong to use cam lube (brake in lube) on cam bearings, or should it only be used on the cam lobes and lifters?

Won't harm them but is not required on brg's. Buy some Melling assembly lube or Clevite brg. lube for your brg's.

Hi Jorgen, I would use the conventional "moly" lube on the lobes and the lifters, and a little white grease (Lubriplate) on the cam journals and all the brgs, rods and mains!

We haven't lost a single lobe in years even with the "less-than-desirable" oils around today for flat-tappet cams!

The old standard procedure for cam break-in still applies, 1500/1800 RPM for about the first 15/20 minutes!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. With respect to a specific brand of oil, for some years now we've been breaking ALL the flat-tappets in using the Brad-Penn 30 W. This oil is formulated specifically for breaking in these type builds.

That was what I was afraid of! So you think it's wise to remove it?

The oil pressure should easily push the moly out of the way, the oil doesn't just flow, it's under pressure.

Now I understand why people recommend BradPenn oil!
I used nothing but Kendall GT1 in my race motors back in the 70s.

From the website:

OUR HISTORY
In 1997, American Refining Group, Inc. (ARG), a privately held energy company headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, purchased the Kendall/Amalie refinery located in Bradford, PA, from Witco Corporation. As a result of the sale by Witco, of the Kendall® and Amalie® brands to a third party, a new name was given to the products produced at the site: Brad Penn® Premium Pennsylvania Grade Lubricants. Founded in 1881 at the height of the domestic oil boom, the Bradford refinery is the only refinery processing 100% Pennsylvania Grade crude oil. It is also the oldest continuously operated lube oil refinery in the world. Due to the consistency of our feedstocks, the quality of our products can be traced from the wellhead to the finished packaged product. ARG's refinery and blending and packaging operations are ISO 9001:2000 certified. The Bradford refinery was the first in the United States to carry the ISO 9002 certification.

I would use assembly lube, the kind you would use on rod and main bearings... Grease will lock out oil flow...

Yes, I would take it apart.
