Default Foromatic

What should I figure $$$ for getting my 53 auto trans rebuilt? Not even sure if it needs it but now would be the time to do it with the engine out?
Thanks

My uncle was a Fordamatic tech. He has been dead 25 years.
Like powerglides, hard to find service and parts these days.

Thanks, this is why I am asking now. I wonder what would be the best replacement?

I replaced mine with a c4, If I had it to do over I would use an aod for the over drive option! Mine is wound pretty tight at 60 mph.By the way it is in a 53 customline two door sedan stock 239 8ba.

The one I am redoing is a 53 vic, stock 8ba. I have a 53 and a 54 donor car but just the 1 with automatic that I am using. How much trouble was the c4 to install/
Thanks

The C-4 is an easy install if you use the kit from Flat-O-Products in Oregon. I've installed two of them with flatheads. Speedway also makes a kit, but I have no experience with that one. I think the Speedway kit uses the larger torque converter. Use the stock Ford-o-Matic rear end or replace with a Maverick. You need a ratio in the rear around 3.25 to 3.45 for good power and cruising speed. You can also install the early Ford AOD.

If you use the fmx trans in the fordomatic case you get a true three speed. The last overhaul kit i bought was under 200. suppliers are listed in hemmings.
