Doesn't appear to have any depth at this point. It runs to the water port edge, and not around the corner. Looks like a scratch. Appears to have no depth to it. (Yet). I'll have it stitched.

Ol Ron, I think you typoed on that rifles range capability? If not, I want one too because 20,000 yards is about 11 miles. I bet she has a pretty good kick if she'll do that.

I guess technically they are a rifle. My brother's old artillery battery had the 8" self propelled M110s. Its only a few inches bigger than those old Navy 5-inchers but both will definitly reach out there and touch someone. I know that the 5"/38 in the dual purpose catagory took down their fair share of Kamikaze attackers. Some were even direct hits. Not bad for a rifle. Since the shells could air burst, some could say it was both a rifle and a shot gun.

The old M110s were going out early in my career. I work on the new M777s now which is a 155MM Howitzer (replaced the M198). It's pretty crazy how far they will shoot even with conventional propellant. I don't know how the tube stays together with some of the experimental stuff. The accuracy is there too when the entire crew is doing their job right.

back on subject. Thanks again KGS. I have exchanged a number of emails with your friend in Iowa City. He seems like is a great guy. That is where I am taking my block.

Sounds kind of strange. I'd look deeper if I were you (sorry for the pun).

I don't think that cracks begin at the surface and work their way down.

I also wouldn't stitch a scratch, that's like killing an ant on your kitchen table with a hammer.

The fire control system of the 5" 38 aboard our Destroyer had a mark 25 radar and a mark 1a computer to handle target acquisition. We did have proximity shells that would explode near the target. A good crew could fire 11 rounds a minute.

I completely agree. A professional machinist will look at it. I'm not going to just start drilling holes in the deck.

Fenders,
Your welcome. Bob and his son have an abiding interest
in the flathead. I'm sure they'll do a proper job. Ken

Another place that you can try is Midwest Cylinder Head in Nevada Iowa. They are owned by Arnold Motor Supply and if you can find a Arnold Motor Supply near you they can transport it there for you. They specialize in repairing cracks in engines. The number for them is 515-382-2791.
