Default Change Out from Ram, Control Valve? To?

Learned Masses:

56 Wagon with 95 Ford Power Steering Pump (and 302) powering stock Control Valve and Ram.

After 6 thousand miles, the Control Valve has a massive leak and the Ram always dripped.

Question:
Does anyone know the pressure put out by the Newer PS Pump? That would save me a lot of time reasoning the newer pump is overpowering stock components of the system. The Repair Manual I believe, lists the stock pressure requirements.

Is there a way to by pass all the downstream components Control Valve, Ram, keeping the stock spindles, springs, brakes, etc?

I can't help you with the pressure value, but I know the guys doing R&P conversions sometimes have to change springs/shims to get the pressure down and stop twitchy steering.

Heidts' also makes a pressure /bypass valve to reduce pressure, its adjustable. Requires a return line.

Design output pressure of the original style pump is 700-900 psi. So if you can find out what the output pressure of your newer pump is, you can determine if you need a bypass and return line. But if one is needed, how will you access the pump reservoir for the return line?

The 95 pump has the pressure valve under the outlet port fitting. Simple to change, Should be in shop manual. Same pump was used on all car and truck lines by varying the pressure. F-350's to Escorts. The heavier the vehicle the higher the pressure. The pressure specs are in the shop manuals. I don't have all the manuals because you need a different set for each series or model lines.

Try a relief spring from an Escort, then work your way up in car size until you like it. Remember, bring the car up to 1956 standards. Don't try to achieve 2020 standards.

Dave, I just "T'd" into the return line to the reservoir. It's a drain, no real pressure. Mine cuts the pressure to both the R&P and the hydro boost for the brakes.

If you can change the shims, that an easier and cheaper solution.
