Default Restoration Qs...early 28 transmission case

I have an early 28 transmission case, it's worn, similar too this thread.
...Transmission info.... I have .041" end play with a new cluster and new
thrust washers(tws). It's the case, not the gear or tws, you can see it
in the case. I called Van Pelt's, Mac said .005"-.015" for 32 thru 48's.
Does anybody have any new information? I checked every book I have
including the Service Bulletins...no help. I'm going to make a new tw
with .006" clearance if I get no good information.

This figure was arrived from what Mac said about later transmissions and
the 600W oil.

Thank you.

I have had the cases welded and re machined so the clearances were correct, but making a thicker washer works too, if the case thrust surface is smooth. The clearances I shot for were around .006, and it worked fine. Too much and it makes a clatter when in first and second.

Center the cluster gear with the main drive gear, then measure with a feeler gauge the clearance on ends of cluster. After cleaning up any roughness on case, install steel shim washers until you have around .006" clearance.

The 28 cases (not sure when it ended) have Brass tw's from the factory.
The front is OK....the rear has all the wear. With the gear to the front,
the input shaft gear lines up with the cluster gear.

I also just took one apart to re-build.. It is of the first style with the large reverse shaft collar assy, (Which I now need).. I had also ordered a new set of the brass washers from Bratton`s that were listed @ .077.. Just to check what mine were VS. the new ones, this is what I & one other guy got.. NEW- inner edge, .076, outer edge, .078.. The old ones were inner .088, outer, .086 ?????...Plus on the new ones the oil grove is VERY shallow & only stamped on one side..

The early housings use a brass thrust washer at each end of the cluster gear. As mentioned Bratton's carry replacements. If after installing new ones and the clearance is still excessive you can obtain a third thrust washer and sand it down to fit properly. You can also take a small disk sander and sand one of the bosses inside the housing in order to get the third washer in place and still have some clearance.

The 4 that I have, from ebay, range in size from .081"-.084". If you look
close, they are "punched" from sheet stock...there is a range of thickness
on sheet stock ( + or - ) a few thousandth's for each gauge size. I'm sure,
but haven't look in the book, they didn't make selective size washers.

I have 1.5" bar stock(Al/Bronze) at my disposal (borrow/steal), which is
better material than the TW's I have.....so I'll make new ones. I also plan
on cleaning up the thrust surfaces, too make them smooth.

Ok, Fine on the selective size thought.. Yours are still a lot closer to mine, So just what was the original ones at.?? Also why are Brattons @ .077 that is quite a bit under both of our originals ??..

DJ & TOM, I have installed the cluster gear & the original washers .. The Dial Indicator shows .023 clearance on end play, moving the gear back & forth.. Is this to much or two little ?? I still ?? why Walts reproductions are smaller than the used originals ??

Morning Fred,

Ya,....I think it's too much! I'm still of the opinion it should be about .006" to .008".
Either do Tom's fix (pain in the fingers) or have some machine shop make a new one(s)
for the front/rear, were ever the wear is. I'd replace my case but it's very unique in
appearance,...I've never seen one quite like it and it fits the month of my car.

I think that is too much thrust clearance, I would try to get it at least under .010. I have no idea why Bratton's don't match up with the originals. Reproduction parts are always a problem.
