Zenith 1 Carb Question
My 29 Roadster runs good if I crank it every day. If I let the car set for a few days, it will crank but has a loss of power when I press the accelerator. I can remove the carb and clean the Cap and Main Jet and it runs fine. I changed the Cap and Main Jet, and it still does the same thing. Any suggestions? thanks.

Re: Zenith 1 Carb Question
What I mean to say is have you gone thru the carb and cleared the passages? The secondary brass well can restrict the fuel on acceleration. The replacement should eliminate
That. I use carb cleaner to see if the passages are restricted. Tom Endy's procedure for clearing the passages with a paper clip is good. |

Do you start and drive the car, or are you just sitting in the driveway? When you say the engine looses power when you press on the accelerator, are you driving down the road or in the driveway? Is there any coughing / stumbling or backfireing through the carburetor? Have you tried opening the GAV mixture setting a small amount several times?

Zenith 1 Carb Question
Are you using fresh, ethanol-free gas? Ethanol gas tends to clog carburetors. I normally drive our car several times a week, and it almost always starts well. If I leave the car sit for several days (usually during repairs), it sometimes takes the carburetor a bit to get back in the swing of things for running smoothly. Usually, I can shoot some carburetor cleaner into the intake, and it straightens out the rough performance.

Re: Zenith 1 Carb Question
Thanks for the replies. I removed the carb and did a thorough cleaning again. I found the .5 inch passageway under the gasket surface between the recessed area for the idle
jet and the recessed area for the gas bowl stopped up. I hope this was the issue. Thanks everyone. |

Re: Zenith 1 Carb Question
You’ve probably done this but just in case,,,,,, where the gav/choke lever screws in the carburetor, there is a passage that is super hard to see on the side that turns at a 90 degree angle. It’s really easy to miss if you are not sure about what you’re doing. I missed mine the first time I cleaned it as it was hard for me to process all the (helpful) information I was getting. I was told more than once to make sure that passage was clean and thought I had but I hadn’t. You will be able to see the end of the paper clip if you are indeed to the end of that passage. Not trying to act like I know what I’m doing but I know for a fact I missed that passage to start with. 😉
Good luck and let us know how it turns out along with any whys. |

Re: Zenith 1 Carb Question
You were correct; the problem was the regular ethanol gas. I haven’t had a problem since I change to pure gas. Thanks
