Drive Shaft that is Bowed
What negative effects could I expect from a 1934 car drive shaft that is bowed in the middle .030 thousands. Mounting the driveshaft between two "V" blocks with a dial indicator on the middle. When I rotate shaft 1/2 rotation, gauge reads 030 thousands. When I continue turning the full circle it goes back to "0".

Re: Drive Shaft that is Bowed
Did it come out of a running car bowed? Or, was the bow caused by an action while disassembled? Seems like you might be able to straighten it by selectively bending it in the other direction. (I've read about people "straightening" Model A frames by chaining the ends of the frame to a railroad rail and jacking in the center.) Also, a driveshaft shop might be willing to spin it and check for balance. As a last resort, you could give it to me and let me worry about it! LOL!

While in the lathe, it can be straightened easily with a torch and a wet rag.. And, yes, with .030 runout it definetly will be a shaker. |
