Water Soluble Grease
Hi All
Can you please help me to buy Water Soluble Grease for my 1929 Ford A water pump. What Brand have you used and where I can order ? The Ford A shops only sell "Water resistant grease" and I do not want that. But when I Google "water soluble grease" the search results are confusing and I am not sure what to buy. Thank you !!! Re: Water Soluble Grease
The only problem with greasing the waterpump is over pumping until the grease gets into the waterjacket. If you tend to do that just use chassis grease.

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Thank you !! But my question was different. Unless chassis grease is "water soluble". In that case, what brand do you use?

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Why are you wanting water soluble grease for the water pump? It was recommended not using water pump grease because it wouldn't melt in the radiator and clog up the system. Chassis grease if in the radiator can be cleaned out. The trick is to pump sparingly.

Re: Water Soluble Grease
We are in different markets so I don't know what products over there do what but I have used the oil out of a radiator stop leak can and throw away the pellets. The problem is that most soluble oils will attack the rubber hoses. I have found a product that doesn't and it is US made so you should be able to get it.
It is made by Cyclo Industries LLC of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It is called Cooling System Anti Rust & Water pump Lube. It is clear and won't worry the hoses. Their product code is C-51 It is an excellent product. For removal of rust from an existing system, you can't go past "Liquid Intelligence", an Australian company. Their rust removal process is a two step process and it is important you follow the directions. The end result is an engine and radiator as clean as the day they were made. http://liquidintelligence.com.au/pro...m-cleaning-kit. They also have a good coolant http://liquidintelligence.com.au/mod...eating-engines. I have no interest in either company.

Re: Water Soluble Grease
They only sell "Water proof grease" for the water pump, as I read in another thread here. I went to his online site and I wasn't able to find it is "water soluble"
From Snyder web site WATER PUMP GREASE Part # A-8500 Model Year 09-31 This is a modern multi-purpose, hi-temp, water proof grease to be used on the water pump. Also can be used to grease the chassis. U.S.A. $9.25 EA Last edited by Forddan; 05-01-2022 at 06:41 PM. |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
The usual water pump grease we buy is not a grease at all. It is a wax that melts in a warm cooling system

Re: Water Soluble Grease
I don't know of any or what it is used for. I do use soluble oil in the radiator as Synchro909 is describing. If you happen to find any let us know what it is and I will see what its usses are.
Edit: From online I found this. Water-soluble grease analogs[edit] In some cases, the lubrication and high viscosity of a grease are desired in situations where non-toxic, non-oil based materials are required. Carboxymethyl cellulose, or CMC, is one popular material used to create a water-based analog of greases. CMC serves to both thicken the solution and add a lubricating effect, and often silicone-based lubricants are added for additional lubrication. The most familiar example of this type of lubricant, used as a surgical and personal lubricant, as K-Y Jelly. Last edited by J Franklin; 05-01-2022 at 06:41 PM. |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Google search of "water proof grease meanin" below. If this grease gets to the water, I have read in many postings at FordBarn, will be clogging the radiator.
https://www.wikimotors.org/what-is-w...oof-grease.htm ...Waterproof grease is a thick lubricant designed to resist wear and washing away in a variety of settings. It is made by numerous companies, sometimes for very specific applications, and can include a variety of ingredients, such as silicone in its formulation. Like other greases, waterproof grease is semisolid at room temperature and is also highly viscous, not achieving a more fluid texture until very high temperatures are reached. This product can be purchased through numerous suppliers and is also usually available at hardware and automotive supply stores. Waterproof grease is made from materials designed to resist dissolving in water. When something lubricated with this product is exposed to water, including more corrosive water like salt water or water mixed with chemicals, the grease will cling, rather than washing away. In addition to providing lubrication, waterproof grease also offers protection from corrosion. Water and other fluids cannot penetrate and issues like rust are greatly reduced or prevented..... |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Here's one but there will be plenty of others - just compare the components.

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Simple Green will clean chassis grease from your radiator easier than a wax base lube. The cure is don't pump excess grease into the cooling system. Or use K-Y.

Unfortunately the PDF file details that this grease is "water resistant" does not mix with water and can be deposited in radiators reducing their efficiency if you lubricate in excess. I will not have any issue to use one of these "water proof or water resistant grease" if I really could know what it is " do not lubricate in excess" What is too much ? Or in other words : what is the amount to be used ? How I can measure "do not lubricate in excess" ? Thank you !!! |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Take your grease gun and give it 1 pump and measure the amount of grease that exits. Use the amount as a judgment on the number of pumps needed usually 1 or 2. Just don't take it to the local garage for a lube job! Want another grease area to worryt about? The zerks on the rear axle shafts need the same care in not overgreasing. 3-4 pumps there are all that is needed.

Let's go to my first posting question : " anyone knows a water soluble grease that I can use to grease my water pump ? " If there isn't one, then fine. I appreciate the answers and the links I have received. I am not really sure what is the question I haven't answer. On my first posting I was clear: - looking for a water soluble grease - for greasing my water pump. If that was misunderstood then I am sorry. But I will appreciate very much to not judge someone without a justified reason. All the best !!! Daniel |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Thank you !! I have read about K-Y and I will give a thought to it. I wasn't able to find d the pictured lub cup that you mentioned. Probably I did a wrong search among the Model A vendors. I will try again tomorrow.
Thank you again for the tip !! Daniel |

Thank you for the tip !!!. I read that others just unscrew the grease fitting and add the grease with the finger to pack the grease and avoid over-greasing. If I do not find what I am looking for and I end using a "water proof grease" from the model A vendors or just the Marine lube many use, then I will carefully look to your technical suggestion. Thank you again !! Daniel |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Use chassis grease was my recommendation! The grease fitting was added for a reason, not for ornamentation.

Thank you !! I will. I ordered the Snyder's water pump grease. Arriving this Friday. I will buy a new grease pump only for this grease that i will also use on the chasis. For the water pump I will first try the Finger Loading Technique and see how that results. Best !! Daniel |

Re: Water Soluble Grease
Not grease, but NAPA sells water soluble oil. I've used it for other purposes and it does in fact mix very well with water.

Re: Water Soluble Grease
A low melt point grease that still functions with moisture is what a person really needs. I use Lubriplate 130AA since it has a melting point lower than 180 degrees and will still have good lubricity when running with moisture.
A grease with a high melt point can clog radiator tubes if too much gets in there. Some folks use petroleum jelly or Vaseline. KY-Jelly was also mentioned. While both can be used in the presence of moisture, I don't know how well either one would be for metal to metal lubricity in high temp situations. Vaseline would have more lubricity than KY since KY doesn't contain any mineral base oil at all. It has water and glycerin as a base with antifungals and antiseptics. At least Vaseline has mineral oil & waxes for 100% of it's make up. |
