Default Backup Camera for Model A with 6V Positive Ground

Yeah, I know. "Real men don't need no stinkin' backup camera for a Model A. Just turn your head and look real good." However, there are convenience and safety factors with backup cameras nowadays.

Can anyone recommend a backup camera for a Model A with 6V positive ground? (I didn't find much when I searched this forum.) I'm assuming the camera would need to be wired to avoid EFI from the engine when the engine is running, but maybe not. Ideally, it would be great to see the camera output on my iPhone.

Default Backup Camera for Model A with 6V Positive Ground

I tried that inverter, and I had problems with it. (It’s still mounted in my car, but it no longer works.) I was hoping to find something that runs “natively” on 6 volts.

Thanks for the post though.

Friend of mine installed a backup camera on a 1926 Packard limo and used a hidden 12v lawn mower battery with a switch under the dash to turn it on.

Just a thought that I have but haven't tested yet. Most 12V backup cameras use very little power. I have a 12v camera that consumes a maximum of 0.3 amps which is equivalent to 3.6 watts of power. A small 12V 5" wireless display consumes an additional 4 W. My plan is to use a small sealed lead acid 12V recharable battery as a power source for the backup camera & display. The battery would easily fit under seat and wired with an on-off switch. This configuration omits the need for an inverter and can also be used to power a cell phone.

Amazon has several wireless, rechargeable, Magnetic, Wi-Fi back up cameras listed. Looks like this might be the answer.

Hmmm… That’s a thought. I have a working 6v USB adapter already in the car that has 2 ports. How would I get the camera’s output to a display in the car?

Agreed, Amazon has tons of cameras of all sorts. Actually, that’s the problem.

I’m looking for something that actually works in a 92 year old car that has lots of EFI emissions when the motor is running. I went through problems with an LED signal flasher that lost its mind when I ran the engine (but worked fine with the engine stopped, which is not very handy for signaling or backing up), and I suspect some/most cameras will do the same when the engine is running.

I’m hoping to find someone who has successfully hooked up a backup camera in a Model A using 6v positive ground with the car engine running without using an inverter. Seeing the camera output on my iPhone would be ideal, but a separate display would be useful too.

There are LOTS of smart folks on this site. (Sorry, I’m not one of them.) Surely, someone has done this.

Why not just use a mini "emergency jump" box? They are small, lightweight and cheap. Most have 12v leads and a USB port. Mine even has a built in flashlight. Wire your camera straight to it to avoid all the ground/interference issues. A 4"×6" box will run a camera and display all day. Plus you can charge your phone with it.

Ferrite beads are cheap enough that it may be worth a shot to install them on the power wire of the flasher relay and see if it behaves properly.

Otherwise, if you aren't worried about being 100% original, there's plenty of room for improvement in the way these cars are grounded. Proper grounding can remove a lot of EMI

Apparently, I can't post URLs yet but if you type "gwc model a grounding" into google, the first result gives a good rundown of what new ground connections to put in

Actually, this has promise. I found it on Amazon.

YEOIZO WiFi Magnetic Hitch Wireless Backup Camera, Back Up Front/Rear View Reverse Camera Night Vision Rechargeable Battery, Easy for Hitching Horse Gooseneck Boat Travel Trailer RV for iPhone Android https://a.co/d/6bwKHHg

It has strong magnets on the camera base that easily fasten the camera to the bumper or luggage rack. The camera display works on my iPhone over the camera’s own WiFi system, and the camera works even with the Model A motor running. So, EFI doesn’t seem to be an issue.

The only negatives that I see are:

- The onboard camera battery has to be recharged after 5-8 hours of use. I may be able to get around that by routing a charging cable to the camera from my existing USB ports.

- The camera has a manual switch for turning it on and off. So, when I want to use the camera, I’ll need to turn it on before getting into the car and remember to turn off when I get out of the car.

This isn’t ideal, but it’s workable.

Install a switch that's activated when you put the transmission in reverse.

LOL. Actually, I'm running a Tremec T170 transmission (~1985ish Ford Bronco transmission). Once upon it had a reverse switch, but it's long gone now.

I don’t recall anyone’s recommendation for a specific model; maybe I missed your post. The one I cited works.

shew01 - I sent you a private message on 6-14-21 telling you of a person to contact that had a working backup camera on his Woodie.
