Cooling for 49 hot rod
Finally figured out how to install near stock crank driven 18 inch cooling fan for my 92 ford 302 in my 49 woodie.
Just got back from the radiator shop, had the water return pipe raised about an inch. Moving the radiator 3 inches forward and raising the return pipe gives me just enough room to install an 18 inch heavy duty flex fan on the crank with a 2 inch spacer. The radiatior is 20 inches wide and the 18 inch fan will have 1 inch of room on all sides for the fan shroud I'm making. Don't believe the 16 inch electric fan I had installed would move this much air! After this I'll have to modify the bumper sheet metal as well.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Everything depends on the geometry of the shroud and its relationship to the fan.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Hope it all works out for you. Fill job on the original water neck looks a little rough for an expensive Walker. Can you make it look smoother with JB Weld or Bondo?

Making progress on fan shroud.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Fine Mexican craftsmanship, cost $45 to move. At least there still are radiator shops! Not too many brass radiators anymore.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Am I imagining it or does that flex fan have a CCW rotation?

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
The flow of air remains the same on a fan mounted either way.
The one shown appears to be CCW specific.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
This Ford 302 is counter clockwise. I checked after the parts guy told me. Not as many fans available CCW!

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Yep, makes sense with a serpentine belt. (engine still runs CW)

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Look up Snow White water pumps, they make a shorter water pump for 289-302 Ford engines.

Crank(engine) runs counter clockwise.

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
I installed a 302 in my '41 Fordor with stock pump driven fan. no mods to the firewall and a Walker 4 core with Walker fan shroud. just raised the radiator 2" and fit perfectly. used a stock Ford 4 blade fan, cut about 3/4" off each blade tip to clear either a hose or crank pulley. ran 175 deg. maybe I'm missing something here!

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Are you saying that the fan is mounted on the crankshaft?

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
.
Man, you're gonna have to convince me just a little bit more. If that "backwards-pitched" fan blade is attached directly to the crank, and that crankshaft rotates CCW as viewed from the front, what kind of transmission do you have that converts rotation back to NORMAL for the drive shaft and rear end? I can't think of ANY modern (or old) vehicle with an engine crankshaft rotating CCW as viewed from the front. Please prove me full of it! DD |

Why would you need to "raise the return pipe"?? Putting the fan down there on the crank snout moves it away from the upper hose, not closer! However, the photos show the fan mounted in the usual location on the water pump shaft. The fan is obviously reverse rotation so won't work on the crank anyway. I'm missing something. What is going on here? |

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Sorry for the confusian, the fan is mounted on the water pump. I verified the water pump rotates CCW by cranking the engine and observing. Haven't done a lot of work on modern v8s, only flatheads!
I bought the hot rod already done. The engine IMHO was mounted about an inch too high in the front so a standard 18 inch diameter fan wouldn't fit without the radiator hitting the hood, had to raise the return pipe on the radiator and lower the radiator as much as I could. The rack/pinion installation was also a disaster and installed an inch too low causing bump steer( had to reinstall at the correct position to get it to steer.) Car came with a pusher electric fan. This hot rod has been quite a learning experience for me. Just proves you need to know what you are doing(or have someone else who knows what they are doing) to put a modern motor in an old flathead car. Fortunately fixing the various drivetrain/steering problems hasn't been expensive but time consuming. Thought the car was finished when I bought it. The overheating problem appeared when I installed vintage air.... Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for the clarification! I see where you're coming from now. You are going from an electric fan to engine mounted fan. I have a '40 sedan which has the fan actually bolted to the crankshaft snout so I thought that is what you were trying to do. And, I assumed everybody knows that a small block Ford engine with a serpentine belt system runs the water pump off the back side of the belt, therefore is running "backward" or CCW. I assume the trans has also been changed. Has the crossmember been butchered for clearance? The crossmember is necessary for frame strength so it can't just be notched out. It needs to be reinforced if it has been cut. |

Re: Cooling for 49 hot rod
Cross member hasn't been touched. Transmission in an AOD. Engine/trans installed as far back as possible without hacking cross member or touching fat man front end. Tight fit!
