oil pressure tank

I am going to inject oil into the engine in my '50 f1 using a pressure tank before I work on getting it road worthy this winter. This engine has sat w/o being turned over for a number of years. I have used the oil pressure sender port to attach the pressure tank in the past, but I wonder if there is a better(more convenient) place to attach the tank due to the proximity to the firewall. Thanks for your input.

bergie. Good idea to pre-oil, but a word of caution, if you haven't already thought of it. Make sure the container you will use to hold the oil can take being pressurized, and to what pressure is it rated. Also, use a pressure regulator on the airline to control the pressure. I suggested this to a friend, and having ignored the suggestion, is still finding puddles of oil in the most interesting place in his garage.

That's the place.

If your engine has an oil filter you could remove the hose from the inlet side and hook your pressure tank to the end of the hose. That will put oil in the same place as the sender port.

Thanks Cadillac512. I was thinking the same thing. I borrow the pressure tank from a local machine shop and it usually has several "fittings" with it for different blocks. The only thing I'll need to do is make sure I can make a secure connection. I've used the tank several times, but the last time I had the oil filter in place and the filter cap was the path of least resistance for the oil. I won't make that mistake again. Thanks, all.

I made an oil pressure tank ~15 years ago that attaches to the top port on left rear side of engine block and clears the firewall on my '35 Ford's. I've used it on two engine builds so far and it worked well. If you're interested in seeing some pictures, PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Years ago I borrowed a pre-oiler from a local machinist that was made from an old pressure brake bleeder tank. More recently I made one using a paint pressure pot. I've also heard of hand pump garden sprayers being used.

This may sound crazy, but is there a way that an empty BBQ propane tank could be adapted to provide the oil under pressure safely?

A propane tank only has the threaded hole where the shut off valve attaches. That means the air fitting, pressure gauge, and oil fill would all have to go through one hole. It could work but sounds like a PITA. AND you don't want to be welding another fitting/fill tube to a propane tank. JMO

If so go ahead with your tank. JMO

I would look at a big truck junkyard for a lubefiner auxiliary filter.I had to pre-lube my reman 855 Cummins and the constructor had the filter setup and I filled it after I re-routed it with hydraulic hoses and pushed oil thru to get pressure before dropping in the filter and topping it off, ready to go. It is on my need list now for that same purpose, & regulator.
Bonus, they are chrome on the high end trucks
