Carb Identification help, please
In a stash of late vintage flathead engine parts was this carb. Can anyone identify what it was used on?
Thanks!

With the way that mounts, based on my very limited knowledge, is that for a 4 cyl?

Re: Carb Identification help, please
That's a '49-'53 Mercury carb . He is holding it wrong. The air cleaner mounts to the back of the carb, with the base down. I'm sure some of the Mercury experts on here will have some more specific information.

Re: Carb Identification help, please
The airhorn, yes (so it points straight back). This will move the base to the bottom. The Mercury manifold is almost identical to a Ford, except for having larger throttle bores and 4 mounting bolts instead of three.

Re: Carb Identification help, please
Is that an automatic choke housing I see? Mercury got an automatic choke in 1949?

Re: Carb Identification help, please
AS Tubman said it is a Holley 885 2 BBl carb. , used on '49-'53 Mercury, and some Lincoln cars. there are 2 different variations. one has the automatic choke thermostat mounted on the carb. the other has the thermostat mounted remotely on the intake manifold. I have never seen a manual choke model.

Thanks. I didn't know automatic chokes were available that early.

Re: Carb Identification help, please
"Alaska Jim" has it exactly right. I have both "Regular" and "Divorced" choke Mercury manifolds. Lucky for me, Rochester made "2G" carburetors in both versions as well. You just hafta "Mix and Match"; everything falls into place in both models if you mount the carb backwards.
I have never seen a manual choke model either. Perhaps on a large Ford truck of the era? |

Re: Carb Identification help, please
Actually the 885F Holley was used from '49 to '51 on Mercury and Lincoln flathead V8's.
'52 and '53 Merc used the 1901 Holley teapot two barrel. It was used on the '52 Lincoln 317 also. Hard to tell if the one pictured is for a Merc. or Lincoln, but my guess is '49 Lincoln based on the throttle lever. I believe in '49 the choke was mounted on the carb like this one. In '50 and '51 it was mounted on the intake manifold. Sal |

Re: Carb Identification help, please
Sal, My early mostly unmolested 51 Merc has the integral choke on the carb. I thought that the divorced choke came on the '52-53 cars. My car also has the early trans. that has the half round bell housing on the trans, and requires a factory adapter ring.

They do show a Mercury service carb for '49 thru '51 that has the choke mounted onthe carb. I've seen and rebuit many of these and have seen carbs with and without choke assemblies, so they were built both ways. Confusing. Sal |

Re: Carb Identification help, please
Just curious what is that wire coming to the front of the choke housing? My 52 was converted to manual choke many years ago so if it ever had that wire it does not anymore.
