With battery chargers, always go positive to positive and neg-neg.

The starter switch and engine block are easy places to connect a battery charger, and this also keeps the sparks away from the battery if the charger isn't turned off while connecting and disconnecting the cables.

BTW, just when does a wire become a cable?

Yesterday I put my 6 amp charger on an old 6 volt battery someone gave me. Today I'll try it, but have little hope since it's 11 years old. However while connecting the charger I did notice some cracks in the insulation on the charger wires, so it's time for more repairs.

Tom am I wrong? When charging without removing battery I put positive on head bolt and negative on starter? Wayne

A wire is a single conductor, solid or stranded, any size. A cable is a grouping of two or more conductors within a single assembly.
