Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
Not a waste for me as I just finished my first build and it helped reiterate to me that I did most of it right and used a lot of those tricks. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
It might have some good tips, but I couldn't get past the "it backfired so much it blew a valve head off and wrecked a piston" part so I can't tell ya. I do know however that guys that start something with BS usually end it with BS.

Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
Tough crowd!
He shared all his tips. Take it or leave it. It's not really for people that have done it all, but to shed some light on "our" flatheads to people that do not know so much about them. It is the first time I have seen anyone (other than me) use a lever down the intake port to push the guide down. I enjoyed it. Good to see some flatty tech content. Mart. |

Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
I have heard that most shops are booked a year out at his point, so more people are thinking of trying to rebuild an engine themselves. Too bad there a not more videos of how to rebuild a flat head engine. I know when I did mine, it involved numerous discussions with club members that had done their own engine work, along with reading numerous articles and books. I still have a nice collection, in 3 ring binders, that I used. Not ot mention the numerous pictures ans videos I did along the way. (unfortunately, when my computer crashed I lost the videos. I can't say it enough, that you should back up your pictures and videos everyday, during a project.) I was lucky and mine turned out great. Now if anything goes wrong with the engine, I am not afraid to repair it myself, which is a good thing, in light of the lack of shops that ware willing to work on them at this point.
If you build the engine yourself, when someone responds to your question/post, you will be able to do the repairs yourself. If you follow the Ford Bard, Facebook etc on a regular basis, it is not too long between the posts, requesting, if any one knows of someone that can work on their engine. The way I look at it, if you only got one hint that works for you, that was one more than you had before you watched the video. I just wish more of the shops would do more videos on the repair and rebuilding of the flat head engine. I don't think they are in danger of loosing too much business to the self builder.s out there! Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
When I decided to buy a car with a flat head engine in it I knew I needed an education. So I went out and bought a flat head engine and proceeded to take it apart and clean it, then reassemble it.The engine tuned out to be a bit older than the one in my 53" Mercury. The engine cost me $300 and when I was finished I sold it for $300. The education was worth a $1,000,000. Yes the oil filter housing is on the wrong side of the block, when I took the pictures.

Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
I'm one of those contemplating rebuilding my engine, which is currently seized, and found this video very interesting. Trying to get information before I start.

Re: Tricks rebuilding Flatheads
I thought the video was good. Always trying to learn something new. Back in the 70’s one of the car magazines had a column called “Trick of the Month”
It was great. They always had pointers like using the skin of a soda can to protect the rings from getting caught in the relief area. Always gotta keep my eyes open for better ways. Thanks Graeme for sharing this. |
