Default Vacuum Gasoline System

While searching for the old Ford truck vacuum tank I'd mentioned, (did not find it) I happened to notice this interesting item. The name on the top is "Stewart Vacuum Gasoline System". I don't know what it is from or remember where I got it. Thought I'd post a couple of pictures of it here

I think they were fairly common on early cars. Seem to remember a Star carcass with such a system.

Vacuum operated fuel pump used on many brands of cars from the '20's & '30's when the fuel tank was at the rear of the car.

I think Ford was pretty much the only manufacturer in the twenties and early thirties who thought it was a good idea to put the gas tank in the cowl and use gravity to feed fuel to the carburetor. Everyone else put the tank elsewhere and used vacuum. I presently have two cars, a 1926 Chevrolet and a 1929 Whippet, with vacuum tanks. With good maintenance, they work quite well although I have to admit they let me down a few times.

Vacuum Tank ,In the 60s ( as teenagers ) we did a cross country trip me in a 38 sedan cousin in a Essex he had Vacuum tank problems .The cousin got lost and ended on the steepest street in NZ the car didn't make it to the top. It started to roll backwards so I gunned the 38 placing the bumper squarely on the spare tyre and pushed him to the top . testament to Ford

Very common in the late 20's, early 30's when styling trends went to longer wheel base, and art deco design, the tanks got moved to the rear and a vacuum pump added.
