Angry Sudden Discharge

Ok my 1933 Super Mechanics out there, give me your thoughts on this one. Car has brand new battery. All circuits seem to be fine, starts fine until it heats up under the hood then its like trying to start with a mostly dead battery, until the car cools off for 1/2 hour. Then it starts fine. This morning he car started strong but the amp gauge was at full discharge. Do I have a rouge mouse in my garage that only comes out at night ? Others had given me advise but the pointer down at did-charge might be another hint ???????????????

I'd hazard a guess that the cutout atop the generator is stuck in the closed position.

I think the problem is the starter. It's probably drawing way to much current when it's hot.

If they are seriously overloaded, they can get hot very quickly, a matter of seconds. The overload can be electrical or mechanical.

How long can you hold your hand on the burner of an electric stove after you've turned it on? (DO NOT try this at home!)

Have your starter checked by a reputable mechanic.
Make sure your starter is grounding to the engine.

'but the amp gauge was at full discharge.'

Starter current does not show on the ammeter. If your ammeter indicate[s] a massive discharge, then you have a major short to earth. The generator circuit does not pass through the fuse [which would blow if any circuit it is protecting developed said short]. Therefore, I say your cutout is suspect....unless I'm misinterpreting what you're attempting to describe?

It sounds like two different issues to me . . . one being the starter itself (and or grounding/connections), the other related to the cut-out. Chase them both down - first addressing the discharge issue (as that will drain the battery in a hurry).

It took me a long time to gain the experience and consider there might be 2 problems when troubleshooting what appears to be one. I would check the cut-out first and then the starter and the floor switch that activates the starter. All connections must be clean and tight. It seems like a lot of people don't consider the ground side of electrical circuits. They are called circuits for a reason and the ground side is equally important as the hot side. That floor switch's cable connections are very close to places on the steering column that could short if the switch itself happened to be loose. When you find the problem or problems let us know what it was.
