Default chrome mold

I have been cleaning up a nice trunk getting it ready for Hershey. The bright metal had lots of chrome mold on it. What is that stuff? I used a dremel with a brass wire wheel and it cleaned up very nicely.

Maybe it's the undercoat of copper (tarnish) leaching through the chrome??? Dennis/Arkansas
