Your opinion: Use; i.e., 1936 Ford needle gauge & sender. 'adjust' float for your tank accuracy.
'36 gauge installation@ your best behest; i.e., bottom edge of dash. hide it with easy-view access, say, a leather or material flap.

For red fluid appearance in orig gauge= roll up -desired length- a red-in-color paper material?

I've read blogs on this quirky 'red'. Does it work? Not for me. It does for me. It works but ambient temperature matters. Mine dried up. Don't smell it or you'll die. I'm scared of the Jolly Roger; I can't look at it, let alone use it.

I use the original fluid that I brought of ebay complete with its corroding bottle. I wear gloves I don't smell it and I don't drink it. I apply it to the top of the gauge using a small 1 ml syringe and a bent hypodermic needle

It works great provided that everything is clean ,there are not 50 calibrating rods in the gauge and everything is sealed up well. Interestingly it to fades over time but much more slowly than what the parts houses sell today

I have a small bottle with an eye dropper in it with a thicker red solution. It came with some boxes of parts I acquired. I always wondered what it is? What is dangerous about the fluid they used in the gauges?

I have an original Ford bottle of the fluid that is from the 1930s that is still as deep dark red as the day it was made. I am extremely careful of it when I put it onto gauges I have restored. If you don't believe me, look at my MISC folder and there are pictures of the bottle and you can see the color.

The fluid is, "acetylene tetrabromide" The more precise chemical name is
"1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane". This is from the instruction sheet from the kits being sold.

I know this is probably a stupid idea but has anyone used red dye? It’s available everywhere and reasonably priced.

The original dye used to colour the tetra-bromo-r-ethane was branded as 'Durant scarlet dye'.

Picture this, you have an old Ford with a juice type gas gauge.
You are driving along and someone T-bones you and the car rolls over. You are not seriously hurt but you are unconscious and trapped under the dash. The gas gauge has broken and the juice is running down your throat. Eventually, you croak. Your heir's sue the Ford Motor Co. and they have to recall all old Fords with juice gauges. I think it has to do with the specific gravity of the fluid.

Actually, it would be fairly easy for an electronic hobbyist to make a digital bar display that would look like the original gauge. It would use a modern tank sending unit.

The late Lee Kelly in ID used to do that conversion.He even did it with the temp gauge.

Thank you, Pete. I'm surprised that your solution in regard to the red solution hasn't been posted, or posted few, if any, times. Surely, one for the want ads: Wanted, electronic hobbyist to make a digital bar display as an alternative alternative to Early Ford fuel gauge red tetra-bromo-r-ethane.

Has anyone done this electronic bar conversion?(fairly recently) does anyone know how to do it, or know how it is done?

As i said the complaints, complaints, complaints regarding the 'red', i am baffled perplexed as to why this conversion has been subdued or not spoken of . . . At all!!! ???
