Hello again, out of curiosity, I looked at some of my older road maps as some of them do have the speed limit , in 1931 in most of the states there is no actual limit, but to drive reasonable accordingly to road conditions, seems strange but remember still a lot of Model T s around with no speedometer. Mid 30,s did come out with limits usually around 35 to 40 then bumped up to 50 before WW2 , when they reverted back to 35 mph. A too fast for conditions is still a ticketable offense.

Back in the 70's our local club went from VA to Nashville to a national meet. As I remember, everyone tried to maintain 50mph all the way down and back. There were very few issues during that 1000+ mile trip. This was before overdrive and high output A engines were popular on the cars.

50 is a good average cruising speed for a relatively stock A.
My "driver A" is not stock so I follow along in the hammer lane.

We did an 80mls trip yesterday and as we are new to the model a, we did not know what average speed we had to anticipate. Driving mostly over anything between light city roads and open country roads, including a ferry ride over the river Rhine, we averaged about 40km/h, that's roughly 25mls/h.

This is Germany, much more densely populated than most of the us. No wonder i am struggling to get any better than 13,5mpg (17,4l/100km) in our FourDoorSedan...

It's not so much an issue of how fast can you go, but more of how fast can you stop! On two lane rural highways 45 mph is about right for me.

Yes, that's correct Dick. (that is after 10pm) There are more lies about 1. The yield of crops. 2. The size of fish, especially the ones that got away and 3, the speeds of Model A's. Gary.

my truck with the 4.11 gears and no overdrive, no faster than 45. that's my rule. Even when I do get the Mitchell 36% od, still no faster, just for more torque and gear options. at that speed my engine is spinning at 1900 rpm, plenty fast for a model a motor. my engine has stock cam, crank, pistons, rod, and head, but does have inserts and adjustable lifters. even then, I will never allow my truck to go over 45 or 1800 rpm. Since I daily it and use it for work, I dont want to ever need a sudden engine rebuild, so it only gets 1800 rpm, where the torque is super high.
