Default Installing new gas tank in a 34

I'm installing the gas tank in my 34 restoration does the spring on the left hand side bolt go below teh tank within the chassis or does it sit above on the tank lip?

Here are pictures, I believe they where engineered that way in case the tank was hit from the bottom it would not rip the seam? Any better reasoning let me know here.

The spring allows the tank to move just a tiny bit when the frame flexes.
No flex and the tank would soon crack.

And, Dave is correct, only one bolt had a spring over it.

Mike,

With respect, a cotter pin was still used on '34s; the safety wire came later.

Also, it wasn't a castle nut on '34s, but rather a slotted hex nut. Castle nuts were phased out during the '33 model year.

Your right looking at my install of the Gas Tank. There is not a washer. I still like my logic of three springs.

Here is the difference between a slotted and castle nut. You won't be able to see them anyway on a 34 from below.
