'53 Ford V-8 starter thru bolt - who gotz one?
Someone in years gone by had replaced one of the starter thru bolts with a threaded rod (forgiveable, but naughty!), and the receiving threads in the starter plate are buggered. Need thru bolt: 5/16" - 18, 7 7/16"L. Starter plate coming off this AM to see how to fix with new nut behind the plate to receive the bolt. Will try to get pictures of this "longer than expected" project.

If it were me I would look to see if I could sleeve the plate by drilling out the offending thread to a larger size then tap to a convenient size locktite in a short section of the proper size screw that I had drilled and tapped for 5/16" x 18. You might check with your local auto-electric repair shop to see if they have proper bolt.

The nut behind the plate would probably be the easiest thing to do then you will need a longer bolt. Last Summer I couldn't find any new source reasonably priced, for this bolt. The only source wanted about $35 for one! I ended up welding two 5/16" bolts together to get the length required. Most hardware stores only carry up to 6" long bolts. Eventually I was able to locate a good used bolt and now have that installed.

Re: '53 Ford V-8 starter thru bolt - who gotz one?
The plot thickens:
I have tried to insert pictures of the starter plate involved to no avail; to wit - viewing from the front of the engine, the threads in the starter plate at the 2:00 o'clock position are bupkus; and, the nut plate at the 8:00 o'clock position has been welded/re-welded, and has broken away from the case. The starter plate can be repaired; with nut plates/nuts re-welded in proper position; and, is a work in progress. Trying to get this all together in time for a new Elvis documentary being filmed here in Memphis that wants to use the Vicky in the film. Will report progress... A different starter plate shouldn't be hard to come by? I may even have one from a Shoebox Ford, if that would work.

Was just able to get the right starter plate in an eBay bidding; the piece looks to be in excellent condition from photos on eBay. Standing by to get it by USPS, maybe a week...will report further when I get the part.

Re: '53 Ford V-8 starter thru bolt - who gotz one?
Here's why I'm anxious to get my Vicky up & ready:
http://www.commercialappeal.com/blog...371559141.html I've been in contact with the folks doing the movie, and they're interested in using my car in the documentary, so I'm frantically trying to get it "right." I have a reconditioned, original radio to install, some rubber bushings for the sway bar to put in; and, with the newly rebuilt starter, I should be good to cruz. |

We have a bunch of nice used original starter bolts. There are a few that are slightly longer than the rest.....not sure yet if those belong to the 51-53 starters for the automatic transmission cars or what.

Re: '53 Ford V-8 starter thru bolt - who gotz one?
Mac, Thanks for the heads up; I'll write an email, and make a request. It was from your page below that I was able to even find the part number of the starter plate that I needed;
http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...s-adapters.htm From the pictures there, I'm wondering if my engine with P/N 6366, starter plate, may be a Merc? Thanks, again. |

Re: '53 Ford V-8 starter thru bolt - who gotz one?
'53 Vicky is up & running; thanks to Mac at http://vanpeltsales.com/ for the starter bolts, & "elkuch6" at ebay for a like new starter plate/dust cover. "elkuch6" has said that he has other old Ford parts; and, if all he sells is cleaned & primed like the starter plate, he's a good seller. I had the starter rebuilt at my local aircraft starter/generator/alternator rebuild shop; it works great.
