Default Access to gas tank sending unit

I need to check the gas tank gauge sending unit in the gas tank. Is there an access panel on top of the tank? I see a 6 inch or so circle of sealer on the mid left of the trunk floor. Is this it or is it hiding somewhere else?
Thanks,
Hunt

That's where every one that I have seen is. The sealer was probably put there buy someone who was trying to make a boat out of the car.

For 1940 the cover should look like this.

Thanks the picture and for the responses. When I look at the trunk floor, where should the cover be located? Left of center, about mid-way front to back or someplace else? I don't see a cover like the one in the picture, just something similar with sealer and original paint on it. Hmmm?

It may be a home made cover to replace a missing one. If that's the only cover, remove it to verify whats under it.

The factory applies a tar like substance to seal the cover. On occasion it was applies quite liberally.
You can see the cover quite well in the photo I have attached herein.

My access plate is on the left rear area, abut 12" in from the trunk opening.

That's it, just where you guys said it would be, very liberally covered with sealer. This gives me another project to jump into sometime soon.
Thanks, Hunt
