Sounds like a 42-48 59ab with an 8ba intake manifold. Does it have a cast on bellhousing, at least the top half of that bellhousing? It has much of what we like in a flathead, but your machine shop may find cracks it the deck surface sometimes down the bores and a few other places. You should check the stroke to see if it might be 4". That makes it a '49-53 mercury crank, which is a great bonus. A picture would of course be helpful to further determine what you have.

Be nice to see a couple pic of the engine, I'd guess it's a 39-40 engines with the wrong heads and sounds like some one as installed an 8BA intake mainfold. Walt

Maybe not a late manifold, I found a 47 Mrcury truck with a fill tube on the right front side of the manifold. Definitely not an 8BA manifold, but I had never seen one like it.

My guess is '39 '40 with the pan rail welch plugs but with late attachments.
The intake description sounds like a Canadian part.

hi!what i seen on the sites so far that the manifold could be canadian or military,i don't think it is 8ba as it as no road draft pipe , also i am in canada, also yes it is pre 49 with the cast on bell housing ,totally different , as i have a 8ba flatty in my 34 5 w coupe if it turns out to be worth while venture it will get a good physical an a dip in the hot tank an mags .thanks for now

Yes It will be a Canadian alloy intake. My car which is NZ assembled came CKD ex Canadian Commonwealth FOMOCO plant. It has the same manifold. You can remove the filler thingy and put a blank off plate in its place it you don't like it and fill from the breather at the back. Most of the NZ built cars 46/48 used this manifold but I think the real purpose of the long filler was for easy access for COE trucks.

You can see the fillers in these two photos. The first one is on my last car an ealy 47 business cpe. You can the accelerator assist spring wrapped around it.
