Default Universal Connection

Installing my 31 engine and ran into a question. A cone around the universal joint has two holes, where should they be positioned. Top/bottom. Left/right
Thank you

Also don't forget to have the gaskets in place as you slide the parts together.

Thanks. The gasket should be between the cone and transmission. Right

Gasket on each side of the "cone".

There is an early and a late U-joint housing assembly with different bolt patterns. The year of the car is not what matters, the early or late rear bearing retainer mounted to the transmission is what matters.

Since we do a lot of Mitchell installs, both overdrive and transmission, we often find a miss-match. For that reason we have been picking up the component for U-joint housings at swap meets and cleaning them up so we can install a correct match if necessary.

Mine was totally missing the cone when I removed the transmission. I bought one on eBay hoping it would be a match. Murphy's law said otherwise.
I just enlarged two holes just like how the gaskets are supplied and works great.

Checking my parts catalog I see the two gaskets and the two inserts for the rear housing. Do I put anything where the two housings bolt together
