Wondering what amperage I should be looking at for a battery disconnect for my 47 Monarch ? Thanks for now,, Moe

If it's still 6 volts, OPTIMA - 800CCA. Unless you're just going to show it. 12 volts? Just about anything that fits will work.

I bought the stock battery disconnect that I mounted on the firewall from Joe's in MA. No problems, seems to carry the 6volt starting draw just fine.

Ar you looking for a battery or a disconnect for the battery? If a disconnect, I use a 1/2 inch wrench - just loosen the nut on the ground cable and take it off. Works every time and nothing goes bad or breaks

Sorry, it's 6 volt. I wanted to know how low in amps can I use or what was the normal that was used.

It has to be able to carry the full amp load on the battery you are using. CCA (Cold Cranking Amperage) might be a good guide.

More correctly, it would be the the current draw of the starter. That would be the maximum load the switch would see.

I bough a disc. sw from a big time auto electical supplier and when I got it home it said 35A. I called them and asked about starter amp draw thru the switch. He seemed to not know how much a starter could draw. Then said " the boss has one on his car and doesn't have any problems". I don't run the starter thru mine! everything but.

The switch should have an instantaneous rating and a continuous rating. 35A would sound like a continuous rating,

Starter current draw could be around 350 amps depending on battery condition, starter motor condition and engine load, and how fast the engine starts up. A switch capable of handling 350 amps for around 15 seconds cranking at a time would be a good start for a 6 volt ford flathead system. It would have a continuous rating of about 100 amps. Look for a truck type all metal housing type and not the cheap plastic housing type which are very marginal in quality. Of course the heavy duty ones cost a lot more. The one I use is rated at 1000 amps and has large brass contacts and terminal studs. Regards, Kevin.

I can't seem to find a vendor up here in Canada that has one like you mention.

I'm not Kevin But in general Boat Supplies or Heavy Truck Supplies should have a selection. Should be a lot of both in Canada I would think.

JSeery............would a knife-blade type disconnect be a suitable choice? I have used those before with no problems but I don't know what the amp rating was.

It would work fine if it is heavy enough to carry the current. Just as a general guess, the cross-section of the parts would need to be in the same range as the cross-section of the positive or negative lead to the battery. The issue I would see is keeping it protected as it would have a lot of open area.
