28-29 adjustable w/s posts
We have 2 sets of adjustable w/s posts. One set is aluminum and quite obviously someones new reproductions...marked USA 28-29. The other set is quite old and beat up...no markings but has notched/keyed adjustment whereas the newer set tighten up like 32 posts. Can anyone help us I.D. these posts? Looking for info on both sets. Thanks!

I have 3/4 of a set of the notched/serrated type. Don't know much about them. Swap meet purchase.

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
Yes, I have an original pair for my '28 Phaeton, which I bought from a Hemmings Motor News ad, about 1964. Generally they are referred to as 'Fold-Down' Windshield Stanchions. I think you may find an ad or two (I know that there were at least two manufacturers) in the book "Those Wonderful Unauthorized Accessories". One manufacturer made them of pressed steel, another of solid bronze or brass - not sure which. They have a slit on the inside for a rubber gasket. They were either nickle of chrome plated. Originals had a round knob with serrated edges - like the windshield swing-arm tightener knob of a closed car. Later reproductions had the less costly armed twist nut, as pictured in the shorter arm of the first photo.
The last I saw of the reproduction Fold-Down Stanchions for the 1928-'29, was about 15 or 20 years ago, carried / sold by Sacramento Vintage Ford, page 438 of their catalog #24-A . Last edited by DougVieyra; 11-16-2013 at 03:17 AM. |

This may be what you are eluding to but if I recall correctly these foldable stanchions were designed for and installed on the Canadian-build Sport Roadster which possibly did use a different W/S frame. |

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
not exactly but that is a very interesting point. The Unauthorized Ford Accessories book shows several different brands of folding 29 stanchions, I just can't see how they can work well given that windshield design. But I am wrong all the time.

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
ericr -" . . . The '29 windshield is not truly rectangular but bows out at the sides. . ."
____________________________________________ I don't know about your windshield, but the Ford-Made windshield on my 1928 Model A Touring car has straight sides, they do not bow out. Hence there is no issue with the pivoting. When adjusted in the normal 'Up' position, the Folding Stanchions have the same angle as the original stanchions, and have the same spacing to windshield as the original. I suspect that your windshield with bowed out sides, is not the norm. |

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
It's some type of heavy diecast material. Not real weldable. Ask me how I know!

Looks like aluminum-based alloy of some sort - have you done a magnet test ?

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
You wouldn't say that if I hit you over the head with it. Heavy.
The shorter 'new' ones are aluminum but not the old one. |

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
Be nice now It is heavy and just the upper post alone weighs about 2 1/2 pounds. I did not have a magnet handy but will check. Here is what I am trying to repair.

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
Mine are non magnetic, but seem too heavy to be aluminum.

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
I have some on mine that are nickel over brass that are very heavy. You should be able to see the brass color on the inside somewhere.

Re: 28-29 adjustable w/s posts
The stantions shown in the Sacramento Vintage catalog were made for us by a man in Castle Rock Colorado. We sold them to Sacramento. These were 3/4 inch shorter than stock and cast of heavy bronze, no longer available . The were then painted or plated chrome. Not much insite into yours but some info on the others.Phil Turner , Berts Model A , Denver
