Default Something Different ?

Here is something different on a Ford Flathead engine? The Carbs are mounted where the Exhausts exit and the Exhaust is up top where the Intake is usually bolted on? A friend sent me these pictures, so I have no details of if it runs or not? Very interesting.

There was a thread recently about a race car that was set up like that. But it was mounted upside down, and dry sumped.

I read something on a flattie that ran backwards. If memory serves, it wasn't successful due to the fuel/air sucking through the block around the cylinders. In thinking about it, I'll bet it had to run rich to stay running at all with its temperature too low, and probably noisy as hell and shooting flames sky high!

Hmmm. That does not look like a inverted engine, but reverse running engine. neat.

Old Old planes ran t & a engines reversed. This is not that.https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8860

Wouldn't it only have to run backwards if the cam used was for the stock rotation? Seems to me like with the cam ground for this purpose, the crank could turn the proper direction so you wouldn't have transmission/ rear end issues.

Probably why we aren't all running them. Interesting though I guess.

Guess you could turn the cam gear out 180 and run stock ignition settings???

Cam very important, yes

Guess it's better then talking about putting a fe or sbc in a old ford. Well more interesting to me.

If 180º out, wouldn't the intake/exhaust overlaps still be wrong? Not my expertise, but I assume that one overlaps the other at different points on the stroke.

I'm not claiming any territory here. Just curious.

But I would think the overlaps would have to be adjusted on the lopes for power. But it'd probably run enough to idle poorly really bad... maybe. Thought was on 180 reversing the cam vs crank.

Its interesting.

You can run reversed induction with forwards crank rotation if you swap a gear drive cam for chain drive, going from chain to gears is slightly more difficult on some engines..

In the UK in the 50s & 60s there was a 1/4 mile oval class for the small 4 banger 1172cc cars. The ultimate in go-faster involved a cam regrind to reverse the ports so you could run 4 carbs. I have the book on how to do it.

There were several drag racing cars back in the day that ran this setup. It’s not that unusual. It took a special cam to do it. One shows up every now and again.

I like that flathead trike. The gas tank, gauges, even the seat looks cool.
The whole thing has some nice workmanship done to build it.

This lil midget used to live 10ml up the road from me.
It also turned backwards & theory was to load the left rear. It won a lot of races back in its day.

I hope this loads
