Distributor Point Lock Nut
Help Please,
Working on a 1941 4 cylinder. My Parts Manual calls for a LOCK NUT # 355823 S7 to lock the stationary point in position after setting the point gap. Can someone help with the nut size and threads per inch. THANKS! |

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Why not just measure to fit the bolt/stud that the nut is supposed to fit?

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Try on a 8n,9n tractor site, that was the original use for that engine

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Looked through the parts book diagrams and do not find the lock nut in question on the point plate or any where else. List of special parts and it is not located there either. In my book (2) 355047-S screws hold the stationary point in position. These are the same screws used on the V8 distributor for the same purpose. 8-32 x 3/16" Fillister head with captured lock washer (external star type)

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Yep, not a nut to be seen in this illustration.

What I have is 1941 Ford built Jeep. It uses the 4 cyl truck/tractor engine with some major changes; down draft manifold with a Holley carb, a cam operated fuel pump, a right angle drive distributor housing with a Holley distributor. And a host of other government required changes. The problem is the points have been replaced over the years with non-original parts. In a attempt to determine the original set I was trying to work "backwards" the parts number of the jam nut #355823-S7 to see what the machine screw thread size is. Example; #10-32 tpi. This info should then tell me what the point thread size is. I have no Holley Distributor manual that might reference this application. My Ford parts books also do not recognize this jam nut number. If someone can tell me how to post a Scan or PDF file or ?? I'll be glad to do as that might help with the explanation. THANKS for the help. |

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Looks like a flathead point arm with a packard threaded stationary contact

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
I would suggest you contact one of the ww2 jeep parts suppliers and buy a set of new contacts. I doubt any ford book or otherwise would list the thread size. Otherwise go to a local auto electrical shop with your sample. Many early vintage car magnetos have this type of contact. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Distributor Point Lock Nut
Gentlemen,
FYI, A fellow sent me a stationary point threaded #8-32tpi x 3/8" that appears to fit the breaker plate. The movable point arm does interchange with the Ford flat head. Apparently HOLLEY used an un-common fixed point. The complete internal assembly can be swapped with an Auto-Lite style and those parts are available. I will pursue the NAPA number. THANKS very much for all the help. I'll keep you posted. |
