Default N.C.-YOM plates

In NC you may use YOM plates if the standard plates are in the vehicle and available to any who wish to see them; Question--must the plates be NC plates? I have a nice set from another state and would like to use them. The law dosn't seem to specify that they must be NC plates!! Thanks

Check with your license bureau, after all, they have the final word.

Pretty sure your state will only honor registering yom plates issued by your state, not another state.

I don't think they have to be NC plates. You don't actually have to register the YOM plate but must have a current plate in the car. I've never had problems with my 1964 plate on my Wildcat.

I am using a YOM plate that is not NC. I do have a valid plate with me at all times. I have read the statute very carfully and it does not specify That the YOM plate must be NC. I have printed the statute along with it's WEB address and carry it with me incase I run into an officer who is not familiar with the statute. Hope this helps!

Each state will have it's own particular provisions related to YOM plates. They all have differences in the details, some minor, some major. I can spell out all the details for my state, but they may or may not apply to you in your state. Every state has a DMV website. You need to go into the site for your state and dig out the particulars which apply to you.

North Carolina DOT web site addresses 35 year old vehicles as antique vehicles, but I could not find a word in their antique vehicle section about YOM plates.

NC General Statutes covering this can be found by searching NC GS 20-63. Paragraph (d) dicusses plates. Part of that paragraph says "Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person.". As I read the law, it does not specify any state. If you chose to use an NC plate you may find them to be rare and expensive. Good luck!
