Default Oil filter

Hello, I have a 1941 Mercury with the Flathead V8, I cannot find the oil filter. I feel really dumb asking this question, but I can't find it. Was it common in 1941 not to add a filter to the motor?

It was common for there not to be an oil filter. If there was one it would be a black canister attached to the head with head bolts. My 41 mercury does not have an oil filter.

The filter (proper) looks like this although your '41 had different lines plumbed than the '40.

Thank you, I was going crazy trying to find it. I have seen picture of them mounted on the head. I guess mine does not have one. What oil weight do you use since there's no filter?

Beautiful Flathead Kube. I definitely do not have that type of filter.

I use 20-50 weight oil in my ‘41 Ford as the motor is tired and burns oil.
Any good quality name brand oil is way better than what was available in ‘41. I don’t have a filter on my car either.

Post a picture of your car when you get a chance.

Rick, I'm with Corvette8n in that I prefer 20w/50. You are certain to get a lot of differing opinions on this.

I'd suggest you simply change the oil a bit more often than "normal" and forget about installing a filter. Say, every 1000 miles.

I'll take a bit of a contrarian view on this, as I believe, given the type of use most of our cars experience, a "bypass filter" can be very beneficial.

If you are not concerned about originality, I would think an 8BA filter canister could be modified for use on an earlier engine. These seem to be fairly easy to find and not that expensive. They resemble the factory setups enough that the casual observer will never know, and they take an easily available element. The mount would have to be fabricated (unless you are lucky enough to find a '49 filter) and some steel lines bent up. You would have to be sure to find one with the junction block that contains the .060" orifice and the sending unit.
