Default Removing a steering column from a 1941 Mercury

I really need some help. Can anyone help with info on how to remove the steering column on my 41 Mercury Sedan. I just can't figure it out.

Well, it's not easy unless you have access to a lift. Are you wanting to remove the whole column? I would start by removing the wheel and gear shift, wiring and column drop and any floor plates. Then you need to pull the steering arm and remove the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame. Now you need to figure out how much clearance you need to move the steering box in to clear the frame. At a minimum I would think the exhaust manifold would have to come out. The column needs to be pulled out the bottom, but getting the car high enough is a challange.

Rick,I just pulled the column and box from my '41 Merc Town Sedan.

Pull the floorboard (may need to pull the heater to do this)and the brace/cover plates at the floor around the steering tube.

Remove the pitman arm from the steering gear

Take the shift rods loose at the levers near the firewall

Remove the steering wheel and the two bolts holding the column drop to the lower dash.Remove or disconnect wiring from ignition switch. Take a picture.

Remove the bolts holding the steering box to the frame

Disconnect the horn wire at the bottom of the steering box

Remove the whole assembly from inside the car...it will fit past the frame and through the floor/toe board. It will clear the seat. Shift lever can stay if you wish.

The Merc has just enough more room than the Ford to make this easier/possible.

Thanks guys, I have all the interior removed, including the dash. So hopefully that will make it a little easier. Thanks again.

And IF I'm not wrong, I believe the Merc is either 2" or 4" longer than the same year Ford....but what do I know? DD
