Houdaile oil
Hi guys I’m installing my 35 houdailes
I did a search but couldn’t find the answer, what grade hydraulic oil should be used? They were rebuilt by Apple hydraulics. Thanks Danny. |

I always thought 90w, probably not correct but I used modern 90-140 in mine but will caution one is leaking now, notrefurbished ‘46 shocks, after 10 years will research seal tolerances

I’ve sent Apple an email too but being a weekend I don’t expect a response till next week. Apple machine the case to use a different seal to original, I guess I may have to wait for their response. Dan.

Castor oil is what Henry used.

I was told to use Hydraulic jack oil, which is what I have used in my 48; project. When I bench tested them, it gave me a pretty solid resistance ,so I am happy with this result. I think its about 10 w but I am often wrong, Dave |

Ford and Who-Die used 8 different formulas of fluid before settling an the final formula around 1938. Mineral oil, glycerin, and castor oil were all used with varying mixes with alcohol & glycerin and varying viscosities of the different fluid formulas. The final formula was mineral oil with an approximate viscosity equivalent to SAE 50 motor oil. With mineral oil, there was a recommendation to open the fluid needle more during cold weather operation for model A cars.
In the modern era, a person may have to experiment with different viscosities of hydraulic oil to get a formula that works for their climate application. Hydraulic oil has anti foaming additives that would make it the best consideration for this design of shock absorber. |

These were in my Dads garage, now in my shed, he used this in his bumper jack. I just noticed the Western Auto says not for houdaille shocks

I was told 30 wt motorcycle fork oil by one of the rebuilders.

Thanks all. I got a reply back from Apple hydraulics. They send them out with AW-100 hydraulic oil. So that’s what I’ll use Thanks Dan.

ISO-100 is approximately SAE-30.
