install oil sending unit
I installed an electric OP gauge & sending unit in my '35. Tried starting & gas pedal only moved a 1/2" or less. Went back to the engine compartment and saw the OP gauge sender unit was interfering with the gas pedal linkage mounted to the fire wall. The sender unit is approx 1 7/8" dia. X a little over 2" tall. I used the upper vertical NPT oil hole in the rear driver side of the block see pic. Vertical section of pedal linkage blocked by sender. There's a 2nd horizontal NPT hole below the one I used that I'll try to use next. Have most of you running the electrical sender through the stock wiring used the lower horizontal NPT hole? Looks like it's gonna be close to interference fit too. Can someone who has an electrical sending unit post a pic?

The horizontal hole will take care of your problem. Ed

Re: install oil sending unit
Anthony, had the same exact problem with the 8BA in my '36, and the horizontal route would not clear the sheet metal either. Found I just had to raise the sending unit a bit to clear the linkage and firewall. See pic. Got two npt to hose barb fittings and a short length of hydraulic hose. The fitting in the block needs to be male and the sender female. You will of course need to ground the sender because you lost contact with the block due to the hose. After install I wound a small grounding wire around the base of the sending unit and soldered the end.

Re: install oil sending unit
1930ModelA, looked at mine again & if using the vertical port I would have to raise it 3" for the large dia of sender to clear the linkage. I like what Ed said & will try the lower horizontal port first. If that doesn't clear guess I'll have to do creative plumbing and rais it the 3" +.

Re: install oil sending unit
Do you run an oil filter? Some years mounted the sender with a T fitting at the filter input.

1930ModelA, you were correct. I bought a 3" section of brass pipe npt threaded both sides add a female to female npt fitting for the sender side. All hooked up & g-pedal linkage has clearance. Looks pretty much like yours. Thx for the help,

1930ModelA, nice layout. It looks as if you've dealt with vapor lock.

Re: install oil sending unit
Thanks Anthony, glad it all worked out.
A bones, Yes. Went to electric pump with return line, absolutely no problems even in the Florida summer heat. |
