Default Which style distributor / camshaft gear do I need?

I am going to be running a 1CM-6250 cam with the 0BA-12127 distributor and aluminum timing cover. First off can I run that cam with the 0BA style distributor, as the parts book seems to indicate two different cams depending on if you use the 7RA vs 0BA style distributor?

Second, if I can use the 0BA distributor with the 1CM cam, which camshaft gear do I need, the 7RA RH helical or the 8BA LH helical?

Third, then that will then tell me which crank gear I need.

Thank you in advance

Jonathan

Maybe asking the question another way and less confusing, if I am using an 0BA style distributor with aluminum timing cover, do I want/need the cam to thrust forward to the cover or rearward to the back of the engine? Or does it matter?

Distributor doesn't care what camshaft is used.
Type of distributor used determines what type of timing cover can be used.
Early '49 Mercury (and suspect '48 truck) used R.H. timing gears.
These were replaced by L.H. timing gears thru '53.

Agree that later engines donīt care about which gears are used, later gear on early front mount distributors is a no no.
There are 2 different styles of aluminum cover with or without bottom support.
Even if a distributor without support fits in a cover with bottomsupport that cover has less reinforcement at top and may fail.

Thanks guys for the replies / advice. I am running the 0BA distributor and the timing cover does have the lower support for the shaft so I am good on that. So since I have a late distributor and timing cover, I need to be using a LH helicoil camshaft timing gear correct?

L.H. cam and crank timing gears. (most plentiful) Distributor doesn't care which one.
