Exclamation Crank Pulley

I'm going to be replacing my crank pulley and key, and was wondering is there a special tool needed to get the ratchet nut off the front of the pulley? All I have really seen is it normally takes a 1-3/8" socket. Any special tricks to getting it off?

Thanks,
Neal

No special tools needed
I find easier with a rattle gun but it can be done without

Do you just put the car in gear so that the nut doesn't want to turn as if a crank was in it, or is there a special way to hold it so it doesn't spin?

Thanks.

Usually you can put the car in high gear and use a breaker bar (sometime a pipe cheater on the breaker bar is also required) and apply some muscle to break the ratchet nut loose.

I made the box wrench that fits around the pulley, then lay it against the left frame rail and hit the starter with the key OFF, and the nut is loose.

I'm glad you said that Tom because I actually thought of that

Here's my tool rig, from an old post:

"My personal rig for Model B, and I am nearly certain it will fit Model A just as well. Better than the OEM crank because you can turn both ways when working on valves or ignition, better than extension rigs because you can work entirely under hood without having to reach around radiator...
First, you need a socket, and it needs to be 1/2" drive because the 3/4 ones are just too bulky to go in there. Following advice from someone on this board long ago, I found that Sears has a 36MM that is just about right and available everywhere. Finding a real inch one that is not too fat will take more effort...
I then snapped one of the little button adapters Sears sells into the 1/2 drive...this give you a 3/4" nut in the place where the extension would go. This is cheap; it comes in a set of the three most common drive sizes. I do not remember what sears calls the widget but it lives near the sockets in the store.
That goes right onto the crank nut without hanging up on the crossmember or the spring clamps.
Now, you can rotate engine with an open end...but I splurged and got a ratcheting box wrench for the job, giving me easy and reversible turning from right within engine compartment."

On getting it to turn...put your wrench setup on there. Then rotate by giving the wrench handle a good smack with a mallet. It will come loose even if not in gear. This has been known as an Okie impact wrench...

I know this is a late update, but I had the socket to get the pulley off. I put the car in 3rd gear, and blocked the back wheels and I was able to pop it right off. I did have to end up loosening the back motor mounts so I could get it to jack the engine up enough to get the pulley off, but all in all it was a very smooth process as was installing the new one. Thanks to all for the info.

I had a crank pulley years ago that appeared to have been installed by a powerful Gorilla.

It was so tight and rusted that it broke my new Craftsman socket wrench ...... finally got it off with a cold chisel.

I once bent a wrench to fit the ratchet nut for turning over the engine for timing, etc.

And forgot it. Started the engine and it removed the ratchet nut. NOT the recommended method.

I thought I was the only one! I’m tempted to paint my wrench pink to keep from leaving it there.

Something I learned about forgetting something important was to hang your keys near where your working, you won’t have an incident

I'd probably forget where I hung the keys.
