Default Removing shackle shells, KRW BV-121 & V-170

I have been unable to find a KRW BV-121 or V-170 shackle replacement tool to buy for the '40. So I made some of the components and used a modified ball joint press for installation. The issue I am having is once the stud is pulled on the old shackle, getting the shell out is not as easy. I believe it is because the "knurled nut" I made on the lathe is not the correct OD or profile. Can a fellow Fordbarner post a photo of that knurled extractor nut with the OD & OAL specs in decimals so I can duplicate it. Anyone know a source for the BV-121 or V-170 ? I have checked on ebay and the KRW site.

once the core is out take a hacksaw and cut the shell, once it is nearly cut trough it will loosen it's press fit

The hacksaw is a good idea, but I would like to make the KRW "knurled nut" to complete the setup.

Make a insert that is .030" smaller than the bore and pull the insert through the shackle hole to remove the remains of the old shell. Knurling is not necessary.

The V-170 shackle stud remover is marginal at best in removing the shell after the core has been removed. The T-handle of the V-170 is simply unable to supply enough force. The much stouter BV-121 can do the job but even with that tool, it is a struggle to get the shell out. I had to use a long 3/4" drive breaker bar on the BV-121 the one I did recently. The hacksaw method works but is not any easier.

If you have all four original guides for the BV-121 it will permit you to remove the whole stud/shell assembly in one step.

I home made the V-170. using a hex head bolt to replace the T-handle. I was told there are very few of the original V-170 around because they broke from the pulling strain, of removing the old shells. I used a grade 8 bolt of slightly larger diameter and it has not broken YET but the strain on the bolt is huge! Maybe a Torrington bearing under the bolt head would reduce the effort.

I modified a shell puller I made, and it worked fine without the nut knurled. If someone is so inclined here is what I did. From McMaster Carr, I got a 6" length of 1/2"-13 high strength steel rod, #90322A153 for the puller shaft, and a steel round tube, 1" OD, .120 wall (.760 ID), 7767T371 for a receiver. I turned a 1/2-13 nut on the lathe to .730 OD for the "knurled nut". Used several hvy grade 8 washers and a flange nut to driver the puller with an impact gun. To keep the puller shaft centered in the shell, I used small section of thin bushing, 5/8" OD & 1/2" ID, and to center the receiver and align the puller shaft correctly I used small section of .750 OD tube with .500 ID. PM me if with your email address and I can send photos of the assembly.
