Weight of FH Engines

"Growing up" I had read (probably 60's Hot Rod Mag) that the weight of the flathead was somewhere between 600 and 625 lb. Now with my new book, Ford V8 Cars and Trucks. I have found spec's for, at least the 1937, 21 stud engine and clutch/transmission combinations of the following:

562 lb, I assume with aluminum heads and intake.
591 lb, I guess with cast iron.
654 lb, for trucks, with the 4 speed transmission

The V8 60's where 391 - 411 lb, with transmissions.

I think the 3 speed would weigh about 60 lb. Anyone have a weight on them?

That put the engine at close to 500 lb, with aluminum heads, not a bad weight for it, only about 25 lb more than the short deck, SBF.

After HS, I hadn't messed with FH's, even though, I've always loved how they look, in part because the FE engine was 625 lb and about 590 lb, with a aluminum intake.

Have any of you, actually weighed your engines, with the flywheel or flywheel and clutch?

Great question! I’d like to weigh a Flathead short block after all the boring and grinding I do on them.

Additionally it would be cool to compare a stock Flatty to one that is outfitted with aluminum components like heads, timing cover, intake manifold and water pumps.

It’s always cool to know how much horsepower and torque per cubic inch you’re producing but in the real world horsepower per pound is also an important metric.

As to component weights, a couple of years ago I weighed a bunch of stuff, and here's what I came up with :

Stock Iron 8CM head - 23.5 lbs
Offenhauser finned Aluminum head - 15.0 lbs
Navarro "Universal" dual manifold - 9.0 lbs
Sharp 4 BBL manifold - 12.5 lbs
Stock Iron intake manifold - 23.5 lbs
Stock iron timing cover - 5.5 lbs
Stock Aluminum timing cover - 0.5 lbs

3/16" over bore, would also amount to about 16 lb.

Is there a aluminum 59A type timing cover available?
