best place and part number for stock style points?
Where would you recommend to buy points from? And how much should I spend? Part number? I can fit them if they dont line up. I really want good metalugry on the points. So that they wont give me problems from just sitting for a month.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
The ignition points that we sell are made by Standard Automotive. I have been arguing with them for 2 years to try and fix the problem. They have the contact recess and contact stamped too far away from the pivot point and it is impossible to get them to properly align as they should. I have sent them distributors and archive blueprints to show them the issue and its like talking to a wall! I have points that they made properly 3 or 4 years ago so they changed something somewhere! There are other points being made in India but they are no better. I'm trying to find a reputable company to make these but so far I'm hitting dead ends. Don Snyder

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Thank you don for effort and the answers. I found these nos points and have the set the car had when I got it, that are from that era. that I keep under the seat in my spare parts. The ebay seller has two more sets if any one else wants to clean up a nos set.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Been keeping my eye out for an NOS set of points. Grabbed one of those sets in your link. Also, try to use an original point block if possible. Bought a new one and the hole for the stationary point was not parallel with the plate...

If you can find a decent set of used (old stock) points clean them up and try them, you may find that they work just fine.

Yes, there are a lot of distributors out there start looking. Original or replacement points from back when you could get quality will serve you well into the future.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
I agree, the best you can get are original ones. Even the used ones can be cleaned up to work well and are long lasting.
As for new ones, the best I have found are from NAPA. I find that they usually have them in stock, or can get them within 24 hours. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHCS30 Ken

These are claimed to be the same as was offered above. but it doesnt look like they come with packaging. the ebay sellers have probably been sitting on these parts. And then have them sell out in a weekend.

If you need new stock points, amazon is pretty cheap. And free shipping if you have prime. Same P/N as Napa. |

What about B part nos? I tried some of the links, but no luck. Does anyone know the modern nos?

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Don,
I just ordered a set of your original points yesterday before I saw this thread. Do I need to do anything different so they will work with the issue you describe? I had bought a set from the local Napa, and they didn't line up which is why I decided to order yours. I'm assuming the new set will line up identical to the one from Napa. Here's a picture... Thanks! |

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Same problem I had. Figured it was the repro upper plate but apparently not.

I also had that mis-alignment problem, filed the mounting holes for stationary point so it could be adjusted to line up.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Ryan,
I had thought about ordering a repro upper plate because I thought my original might be the problem. Katy, Looks like I'll have to go your route - thanks for the idea. |

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Still have to fit the NOS points but if the fit well I'd say the new plate is not the problem

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
That ground side of the points is adjustable. Remove the points cam and then rotate the top plate until it comes out. Loosen the 2 screws and see if the block can be lined up with the movable contact.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
I can confirm that the NOS points fit better than the new ones and appear to be high quality. The pictures below are both with the point block in the same position. I did enlarge the holes with a file to make the new ones fit a little better before I got the NOS set. Ended up needing to move the point block in a little to correct the alignment.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Tom; Is this where Katy did some filing? I was considering filling the hole where the stationary point screws in and re drilling and threading the hole. Sounds intimidating to me. Jack

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
I filed the 2 holes in the upper plate that the point block attaches to. Simple.

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Buy the new machined block from Bratton's. I bought 2 of them. They fixed the problem with the Standard points the vendors sell.
https://www.brattons.com/machined-di...int-block.html It's a real shame the vendors can't get Standard to listen to them, but at least a part to correct their mistake has been made and is available. |

Re: best place and part number for stock style points?
Just FYI, the NOS points I bought from the link at the beginning of this thread are working great. The past 4 years with modern stock style points I've had to file them and clean the oxidation off of them to get the car up and running.
Got it out of storage today, turned the key, pulled the choke, two cranks and she was running. There's no replacement for quality parts. |
