Default Working on the '41

I spent the holidays working on my 'new to me' '41 Business coupe.

New: Tail lights, Bob Drake water pumps, King pins, MT Bendix brakes, Master cylinder, Trunk lock cylinder, Vent windows and Trunk rubber seal. Replace: broken horn ring, leaking shocks, adjust steering box fill & with cornhead grease and remove years of crud from steering components. Halfway through doing the brakes I found that the right rear hub wouldn't come off. After a lot of swearing it finally came loose and then I found the reason (see below), now the search is on for a replacement axle shaft . Any suggestions for a source would be appreciated , I don't need NOS, just a good used one will do.

You've been busy on that '41. I sent a PM about a possible source for an axle shaft.

Meric42;

Amazing! Looks like it did fracture - close to coming apart! Must have
gotten hot or been heated! Lots of work --you're the man.

Have a couple here in Tulsa Oklahoma ----and they come installed in
a 1942 Ford SEDAN DELVERY! What say?

I think I saw on here a few days ago that Fred Wilner at Southside Obsolete has NOS axle shafts. If I had to go through all the effort that is required to replace an axle shaft in one of these cars, I would want the best replacement possible. It is a job you DO NOT want to do twice because you cheaped out on parts. He is "barnfind08" on here.

If I had to do it (again), I would replace both axles with NOS parts if available.

That axle is a definite "wall-hanger" though!

Check with Russell Haines in Ashburton, he may have one or know where to get one & a hub.
Good Luck!
Cheers

Thanks Gene, the '42 (33.7") axles are about an inch longer than the '39 - '41 (32.85"). I already have 2 '42 Sedan Delivery's, one of which came from Claremore OK in 1995, so I can't justify buying another . This '41 and the other 3 cars ('51, '53 & '57 Ford Convertibles) I bought last year also came from the same collection in Claremore. They belonged to a very good friend of mine who passed away in October of 2017 and I purchased these from the family last year.

Meric, Bruce Ardell in Fordell has one 81A axle. Last year when I built my Columbia, I purchased off of Bruce, two NORS 81A axles. He had three to choose from. The one I discounted was not in fact new; had been used, but is still a very good replacement axle, mint taper and keyway, first couple of threads looked a bit ropey. Phone Bruce 06 342 7713

Or...Stateside, Bob Selzam [Half Ton Fun], has one only NOS genuine Ford axle, but it is rusty.

No way I add salt to injury, but I see this all the time, that did not happen overnite. We
had a 2010 F350 come in with a melted rear end, ring & pinion fused outer wheel
bearings fused to axle housings, total junk. Not being wise but somebody needs a
hearing aid or new batterys for it. That truck must have screamed for a long time. Yours
could be built up, turn new taper, keyway, re thread, but someone has one and a new
hub.... bet Ray Helger Little Compton RI has a NOS axle. He stocks thing that ain't been
invented yet LOL Rays phone 401-635-4849 sam

I have a used one. The taper and key looks really good but the side gear has rust pits.
PM an email or cell and I'll send pics.
