Default Carbon Monoxide Article

I have been asked to research and write a short article on Carbon Monoxide for my Model A Car Club.

Questions: How many deaths in recent years from CO in 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010 excluding suicides.

A few years ago, I read of 2 brothers that were victims of CO while working on their car. Do you know were I can find this info/article?

Thanks.

Why not just google your questions for more accurate answers? I know it is easier to let others do your work but sometimes lacks in accuracy. Wayne

During 1999–2010, a total of 5,149 deaths from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning occurred in the United States, an average of 430 deaths per year. The average annual death rate from carbon monoxide poisoning for males (0.22 per 100,000 population) was more than three times higher than that for females (0.07).Jan 24, 2014

A carbonmonixide detector can be purchased (battery powered) for around $15.00. A good thing for Model A's during the winter months.

I suspect the stats in #2 pertain more to homes than cars/garages.
It is not clear what category the OP wants

The 10% ethonal gas reduces CO output, my car on regular gas had a 4% CO output, the same settings with ethonal gas---0.5%

What? There is a benefit to using ethanol in gasoline? How can that be? ;-)

For a detector you could drive around with a canary in the car, but then you might get arrested for tweeting while driving.

Old31:

I mounted the smallest CO detector I could purchase on a piece of scrap wood and place it on the floor of my car near the passenger side. It is the same detector I place around my garage when I run the car (always with the garage door open).

I heard many detectors are no good after freezing, is this true, I would hate for someone to have a false sense of security in a non heated garage.

Like smoke detectors they have a limited life. Seems to be around 5 years. I try to check by taking out into the garage after backing the car in. If it goes off I figure its good.

A buddy of mine used a salamander to heat his garage, it almost sent him to the hospital a few times.

Yes and finally we see the positive side of protecting the environment and our future. We get a little turned off by the Crap Gas crowd! It is time they accepted reality and respected the planet. Wayne

Similar thing happened to me at 20 years old working at the local Sunoco station. There was a 2 ton farm truck in for a tune up, we didn't bother to open a door or hook up the exhaust tube, was winter time, I passed out they carried me outside to revive me.

Worst headache I ever had in my life after I came to. I'll never forget that.

I knew a fellow that came home with his girl friend after a night of frivolity and they toddled upstairs to bed. Never woke up and they were found to have died from CO poisoning. In their excitement they forgot to shut the car off. It was found with an empty tank and a dead battery, key in the ignition in the on position. Most of the fire fatalities I went to were from inhalation of products of combustion rather than burns. Gotta be careful out there.

Might have mentioned that CO is odorless and colorless. If you have a bad leak into the cab you may become dizzy and not realize the cause. Roll down your window, drive to a safe spot off the roadway and find out why you are dizzy. 911 is a good number to remember for those occasions. The responders should be able to recognize the symptoms.

Mine is more than five years old, and no, it does not work any more. Getting a new one. I'm more concerned with carbon monoxide from my shop heater than my car, which I never run inside, even with doors open.
