Default '40 Pickup full restoration project

Many of you seem to enjoy photos of a restoration's progress.

Hope you enjoy these. This one is intended to be as correct and high quality as possible.

Kube, what paint system do you use? Base/Clear, single stage? Also, where do you get the dash knobs, choke, throttle, cigar lighter ect....? Do you buy the reproductions and what source do you find the most accurate and good quality. You really have the project looking good as usual. I'm asking because I have a '40 standard tudor project I'm hoping to get too soon.
Thanks,
Seth

Thanks for the kind words.

I prefer base / clear. It is sanded between coats as well as the final sand / buff.

I buy the repop knobs from Carpenter. If I am not mistaken, they are all made by the same guy - Carpenter. To be "correct" the recesses on the "standard" knobs need to be painted white.

Yes sir, Cloudmist Gray. I went to great lengths to get the shade as close to authentic as possible. The "usual" sources of paint are not close.
I was lucky enough to have a pair of doors from a '40 coupe as well as a wiper motor bracket that had a lot of the authentic paint remaining. The bracket and the insides of the doors had (obviously) been shielded from most the outer elements so as to allow me a good glimpse in to what the color actually was back in 1940.
The inside of the doors vs. the outside was amazingly different.

Thanks Kube. When I get into the tudor I may have more questions if you don't mind.

Were you at the Gettysburg meet? I was there talking with Ken Stewart (Redneck) and he suggested I help judge at the next meet I attend. He suggested this would be a good way to learn more about the '40 Fords. I'm a novice with the '40. Ken told me you would be a good learning resource.

Thanks again,
Seth

Beautiful work on a very difficult vehicle to restore.

Were you able to find a correct '01C' hot water heater with the drain hole on the bottom of unit? A difficult item to find for sure.

I think a lot of us wouldn't mind seeing you do a complete build thread Kube. Covering the process start to finish, you wouldn't have to reveal all your magic tricks if you didn't want to. I know I'd check it out.

Nice truck.

Yep, that's the correct heater. I was happy to find it (Thanks Larry C.). Larry was also helpful in providing a template so I could install it in the proper place.
This project has been a lot of fun thus far - quite different from all of the coupes and convertibles I've done.
Plus, as a bonus, I am learning new "stuff".

Nice truck.
Maybe my next project in line... a '40 convertible. I am part way through it already but have placed in it storage until the truck is completed. I have tons of photos of its (the convertible) process to date so could "go back" to the beginning.
If you think there'd truly be interest, I could do that I suppose...

I vote FOR a build thread, so I can use it on mine. That's beautiful CMG.

When you get to the seat, can you post some pics of how they connect to each other, as well as to the cab back. I'm missing something on mine.

Mike:
Looks good. I can see that heater switch is located incorrectly. Check the factory photo in Towne's book on page 40 and you see it located slightly left of the throttle rod on bottom of dash. Also your tailpipe should be a 91C part which ends several inches after the rear hanger. You can see this on the factory photo shown in the Mack Hils book. This will be easy to fix by cutting off the excess length...........Larry

Love the truck, I'd always be interested in pics of a good quality job, Mike. I tend to work at the other end of the spectrum as far as finish goes, but love seeing the shiny stuff. Don't hold back on truck updates either.

Good morning Ken,
Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, the truck is painted in pieces. The doors are done but I won't install them until the interior is completed.
I did have the doors installed temporarily so I could get the body strip aligned exactly with the cab.

Larry, this is a very early truck according to the serial number. The only hole for the heater switch was to the left of the steering column.
The tail pipe, as well as the rest of the exhaust system was NOS - purchased through Carpenters.
I will double check the length of the tail pipe once the bed, etc. is in place. As always, your advice is much appreciated. Much of what I have done was made easier because of your help.

Might that be the aforementioned '40 CONVERTIBLE cowl peeking-out from under the tarp in the background? As always, some interesting stuff layin'-around in your shop, Kube. DD

Yep, that's the one. It's come a long way. All of the metal work is done. Almost all of the parts & assemblies are done as well. As soon as I can finish the frame and the body, it'll be (for the most part) just one big assembly process. I even have the seats done.
Even the Mercury engine is ready! It took me years to locate a set of NOS high compression aluminum heads. The paperwork (original) that came with this car called out all of the "options". Those heads were the toughest thing I believe I have ever searched for.
I was excited to find this car. One of 111 built. I even have the body tag!

I am hoping to get back at this project soon - completing it sometime next year.

Seems like I remember you posting this picture of that Mercury engine some time ago. It's amazing that a very few folks still feel the compulsion to exhibit the amount of detail in their work that you do. DD

The beds were metal as you suggest. I am currently working on that. In fact I am welding the bed in today.

I believe the beds are similar 38-41 but wasn't completely sure. Were you able to get or savage a 40's metal cover, or is it retail. If retail, who would you recommend?

Nice work Kube, not a slam but way too shiny for me. I'd be afraid to touch that beautiful work because I'd probably screw it up. Sure would of liked to see what you started with. Keep the pics a coming.

As seen on my original '41 bed, the wood slats were random width hard maple making me think they were made from scrap pallet dunnage The underside of the bed metal was painted with a brown paint much like rustoleum rusty metal primer.

The authentic wood from this bed, which I'd replaced, was maple. However, unlike yours, all the tongue & groove planks were of the same width.
I have little doubt that the wood that is exposed (under the bed) was originally painted very haphazardly when the bed "framing" was painted. I chose not to paint over the wood as I prefer the definition of the detail between the wood and the painted metal.

You misread. Underside of the bed (floor) metal was brown primer color.

I understood your message. I was simply adding to it in my response.
However, after (re)reading my response I can easily see how it could have been understood as you read it. Sorry about that.

I realize that Ford simply primed the underside of the metal bed. I am certain they would not "waste" (finish) paint where it was not necessary.

I've noticed that Ford did this clear up into the 50s. They used a lot of red oxide primer. I wished they had used it inside the rockers on the mid century Mercs. Maybe they wouldn't have rusted so bad.

I'll add a "nice job" as well. Neat to see a pickup like this restored instead of "chip foosed".

Thanks for the kind words. I understand the hesitation to drive it... this one probably won't get driven much, if at all, once completed.
This truck was much rougher than it appeared to be prior to disassembly and stripping. It is certainly NOT the truck that the seller had described. It was full of putty. Even the roof was full! The rear fenders were beyond repair and to me, that says a lot. There must have been ten pounds of putty in each one. The photo attached depicts the front of the box. There was a 2" x2" piece of angle iron poorly welded in there with about a 1/4" of putty over it to "smooth" it out. Cab corners were full of putty - so much so that both the inner and outer corners were replaced.

The floor was full of fiberglass and putty.
On the bright side, the doors and front clip were very nice.
Regardless, after about a zillion hours in body work, it (body) is nearly complete.

Okay, I still have much to learn and am hoping one of you truck guys can help me out...
Is there a welting between the windshield garnish moldings and the dash? If yes, is it painted or black?

Kube, excellent work, did you repair the floor or replace it? If you replaced did you use front half in pieces or the one piece complete floor? I'm replacing a hot rod floor someone hacked in before me, any information would be appreciated! pictures? Thanks

I utilized pieces. I believe that allowed me a better (more accurate) fit. It took more time to do it this way vs. a one piece pan but in my opinion, worth the effort.

Truck is coming along well. Rear fenders now have the witness coat applied and the first (of many) blockings will begin yet this week.
The entire box is also witness coated and should have the first blocking done late next week.
I managed to install the windshields and garnish moldings today.

There was no welting on the 40 Tonner (photo attached). The photo was taken when I bought it from the original owner's son-in-law. My apologies for not responding sooner all my truck photos are on a laptop in CA. Good choice on the body color...!!!

I really am not too smart, and I tend to get a lot of stuff wrong a lot of the time, but it surely looks like I see substantial amounts of welting in that picture. DD

There is welting between the door and the cab. The attached photo may be clearer in that it shows the garnish moulding in direct contact with the cab (no welting) and the door welting next to it.

These are the only other photos that I have that show the top of the dash and the garnish moulding. I know of an untouched 40 commercial here in SoCal that should clear this up. The owner usually returns to CA mid Nov. I'll send you photos as soon as he gets back.

I have never seen welting on the garnish moldings, including mine, but it wasn't original when I got it. When I was doing mine, I looked at a lot of '40-"41's and never saw any.

If the louver in the garnish is for defrost function, they may have put something there to seal the air flow a bit. It may have just been some sort of anti-squeek though. This is just speculation on my part.

Either side of the defrost louver, inside the garnish moulding was a small piece of soft sponge rubber that sealed the defrost are from the rest of the inside of the garnish moulding.

Kube has been a great help over the last couple of years for me. So for that I just want to say "THANKS". Kind enough to send me emails and even suggest vendors. I go to a local '40 ford show in SoCal - Anaheim, CA and I wish more guys there were like him. As a novice restorer (actually my first build - 40 1/2 ton started at the age of 28 and still building), there is a lack of interest in passing knowledge. Top notch work!!!! I will be following (and asking questions along the way as always!!!)
Question 1. - HAHA - Do you have the horn and bracket yet? What does it look like? Thanks

Thanks for the kind words. I feel certain I am not deserving of them but thanks nonetheless!

I had the horn but was lacking the correct bracket. Fortunately, a wonderful gentleman in New Zealand came to my rescue. Yes, New Zealand! Kind of neat to think the travels these old vehicles and parts have made in their "lives".
I've attached a couple of photos that hopefully will help you in your search.
Kind regards,
Mike

After a lot more research spurned on by numerous responses suggesting there was authentically no welting, I have come to the conclusion that most likely there was in fact - no welting. Subsequently, I have removed it.
Thanks guys. I keep learning!

Guys, I'd like some opinions please...
I have three different air filters for this pickup. The regular dry type, the usual oil bath and the heavy duty oil bath. I am seriously considering going with the HD oil bath. It is not often seen, is reasonable to believe a truck would have had one installed and well, what else am I gonna do with it?

Anyway, let me know what you think...thanks!

You definitely will not want to put that on one of your cars, I think with a truck being a work vehicle, it should have the heavy duty accessories. It looks good too!

After the dust bowl years, I bet that HD oil bath would have been popular with the farmers in the mid section of the country. It's definitely a fine specimen.

Kube/Guys

I noticed in one of your pics the cab sitting on top of the mounting wood. My wood from northern classic trucks came unfinished. Did you finish yours? Was there a "stain"/Paint or color they were done in?

Ford didn't go to too much trouble in 'finishing" the wood parts. Typically, items like floor boards, tool tray covers, cab mounting pieces, etc. were simply dipped in a mixture of used oils creating a blackish appearance.

To replicate that appearance I stain the wood pieces with MinWax Ebony. It takes two and sometimes three coats but the finish is nearly identical to some NOS floor boards I have.

Left over from my '41 pickup restoration are the sheet metal strips that fasten the overhead upholstery to the cab. They attach just over the doors. They are perfect and actually painted to match my vehicle. My modern type upholstery job didn't use them. If anybody needs them give me a PM.

Funny you should choose now to ask Just this week I started back painting. ALL of the remaining body panels are now prepared for finish paint.
The cab assembly is completed as is the chassis. Once the front clip and bed are painted / buffed, it should not take too long to complete this project. I'll post some photos as I progress.
Thanks for asking!

Hey guys, it's been a while.
I am happy (thrilled actually) to report that ALL paint work has been completed. I have the box, tail gate and hood to buff.. Once the buffing is done, it shouldn't take too long to complete this project.
The hood was beautiful to begin with - perhaps the best piece of sheet metal on this truck. Unfortunately it did not fit well enough (for me anyway) at the cowl. The hood was about 1/2" too wide from side to side across the back.
No surprise to those that know me but I split the hood and narrowed the back. It now fits perfectly and, no, even the best eyes could ever tell it had been split.

Can't wait to see the finished product. I'm getting ahead of the game, what is the next project in waiting?

Another '40 convertible. I am eager to get back to that one. It should go quicker than most as much of it is done already. I have quite literally dozens of boxes of parts ready to be installed. The engine, transmission, well, the entire drivetrain is ready to install.
Nearly all of the metal work has been completed too.
Man oh man, I'm looking forward to that project coming together.

Not planning on it. With summer approaching rapidly, there is much to do around here. Plus, I really want to concentrate on completing this truck and getting "serious" once again with the convertible. My next planned show (for certain) will be Dearborn next year. I am really looking forward to that!

I'll see you at Dearborn. I was hoping to catch up to you at Chantilly. I have never attended a Grand National, it should be a good time as well. I apologize for hijacking your thread.

Hi Kube, Got a couple of questions, I see that the instrument cluster has a 60MPH speedometer, is this a 1/2 ton pickup? also are you going to use the wheels that have a star stamped on them next to the valve stem hole?

Kube, sorry I looked at the speedometer wrong, I do see that it has the 100 MPH speedo, but still wonder about the wheels.

Buffing the hood today. That will be installed promptly thereafter. Once the hood is installed, the remainder of the front clip will be installed. I am getting excited about this one

A great day indeed! Have the hood on - gaps are beautiful. No doubt a little adjustment will be necessary once the fenders and grille are installed. I'm beginning to see a little light at the end of the tunnel

Kube, Just wondering was the hood bent or was it just the original manufacturing process that made it fit poorly? Seems that all the 38's and 39's are out of alignment (especially where the hood joins the grill) and there is only so much you can do to correct it.

Hi Everyone. Kube thanks for the photo and bringing us along. This hood looks marvelous. The lines/gaps are very pleasing to the eye!

Edit to add: I think I got in about two sentences with you in Springfield, and I'll never forget the deluge in Saratoga Springs where my Dad, Henry judged with you, and I think you had a freshly done Wagon out in the elements. I'll be sure to get my ducks together for Dearborn so I might try to say hello again.

I restored my 36 with the same goals in mind, especially satisfied with Base/clear coat paint that shows off the beauty of the body. My driver was a nice 40 Ford PU I drove for 19 years - seeing yours made me regret selling mine to finish the 36. Can't wait to see yours done.

The hood was perhaps the nicest piece of sheet metal with this truck. However, it did not "match" the cowl - being about 1/2" too wide. My opinion? The hood was poorly assembled (welded).
Without going in to too much detail, there were numerous indications that's exactly what the issue was.
Good enough for production no doubt - not good enough for a restoration.
It took quite an effort to get this right but it had to be done.

Hi ya Jeff,
Yep, I recall that day in New York quite well. Your Dad was one neat guy. I really enjoyed my time with him.
Deluge? That word describes quite well the rain we had...
I did have a freshly done '39 wagon "in the mix". After the rain, a lot of effort to clean it... you know the routine If I recall correctly, the car did 998 so I was pleased.

Dearborn has been historically held at the Hyatt, in Dearborn, MI. It is usually in July. That would be 2018.

Yippee! Started hanging the front fenders and grille yesterday. Happy thus far with the progress. I already had the hood aligned properly and will progress by fitting the fenders, etc. to the hood.

I have to share this as I am so thrilled... In all of my experience I have not once had a front clip go together so well, so quickly, as this truck.
Yes, of course, the sheet metal is fit prior to final paint, etc. Still, once painted, it always seems the metal "magically" moves, making the assembly (alignment) process a test of my patience.
This one? About one good, albeit long day, and the front clip was DONE.
Even as I write this, I am reliving the absolute thrill of how well this one went together.
I know I am dreaming to think the next will go this well.

Friday I will be placing the bed on the frame. Can't wait

Not shown on your "inside cab picture) as the hub of the steering column is in the way. There are three holes below the Ford emblem: One for the choke, one for the hand throttle and the center one is for the light switch? Is that correct? Also on the left top corner of the dash is two silver like buttons, any idea what they are used for?

Fred,
Here's another photo that I hope will answer your questions.
Two silver like buttons? My guess? A modification made sometime in the past - not "factory". Perhaps you could post a photo?

Nice open space to put it together in has to be pleasurable. Great looking truck, the attention to detail is incredible.

Where do you get your floor mattes from please? They look great.

Take apart, clean (emphasis on lots of cleaning here), repair, trial fit, repair again (with possible repeats), final fit, prep/paint, then final assembly and hopefully no repeats in there.

Its definitely all in the many hours of prep work that makes it go together so well. Work well done and rewards innumerable (lots of jumping for joy here). It looks like you're getting close to having the other kind of fun with it. Driving it is only part of the fun though.

You are of course 100% correct. Still, I have to wonder why that with the exception of this one, all others have been a pain in the butt to align. And yes, that's after trial fit, another trial fit, paint, etc... It's black magic I tell ya - black magic.

Got the box on today and have just a slight fitment issue with two of the bolts. That should be readily solved tomorrow. '
It is now officially brandy time here in Wisconsin.

Oh yeah... "driving it". That will most likely never happen. With the exception of the trailer(s) loading & unloading.
It's a sickness

Thanks for your kind words. I am obliged to you.

Floor mat was purchased from Dennis Carpenter. It took only a minimal amount of trimming to make fit very nicely.

The boards took a lot of metal work to get them looking as good as they do. Can't use filler when both sides need to be perfect.

More than once I felt like tossing them and finding better. I'm glad I stuck with it.

A lot of stuff was hand made in the 19th century but fewer folks carried that knowledge into the 20th century as fabrication got more automated. Metal shaping is truly an art form and I for one am happy folks are getting back to that. Primer & paint coatings don't last forever and polyester filler, even less. Lead/tin fillers were better but hazardous with heavy metals and mercury (back when it was still in use). To use lead/tin now is not as easy as it used to be and it was never really easy even back in the day. I think it's easier to pound, shrink, & file and use primer to fill the less than perfect spots.

Geez Kube, off the hook. I noticed you started the thread in 09-20-16, when did you actually start the restoration?

Off topic, I don't know if you remember but when I picked up the 32 fenders from you, you had a little green roadster that you showed me. Still have that little dream boat?

Mike,Did you end up using welt between board and fender?I used on my 48. I'm pretty sure it is on the rear fender face the mounts to bed side. Sure will be a Dearborn winner when done! Ken

I started the truck in May, 2016.

I don't recall the green car so it apparently is gone Or maybe I simply misplaced it. Getting older does have some drawbacks.. CRS is one for sure.

I used anti-squeak material (no bead visible) as two helpful fellows with very authentic trucks had witnessed it between their board and fenders.

A guy could look at that thing all day. It's too bad they don't stay that way forever.

I doubt this one will see much more than a trailer so it should stay nice longer than most. Still, you are correct in that they don't stay forever. That's always been a tough pill for me to swallow.

Most likely it'll be in Dearborn. I am doing my best to get my convertible done in time as well. I was thinking of starting a similar thread about that project.

Thanks Deuce (and others) for the very kind words. Truly, I appreciate you all.
This was a fun project being so different from the coupes and convertibles I'd done in the past. A nice "deviation" for a bit...

Ya know, I've never met Kubarth (Kube here on the barn), but we all know by now that he's overly-infatuated with '40 Fords. You could probably safely say that he's pretty damned knowledgeable about every single nut and bolt that Henry designed into these '40s. Most folks on this FordBarn are well-aware of the advice and help that Mike has given to members here over the years. Most are also familiar with many of the absolutely beautiful restorations that Mike has done in the past, and that virtually every one of his restorations ends-up being judged to at least 998 or 999 out of 1,000. Mike (or anyone that is SO insistent about EVERY last detail) has to be what I would call "anal", or anal-retentive. And, that is meant to be a compliment, Kube! My point here is that Mike does beautiful, pristine, perfectly-aligned, nothing overlooked, fully-detailed and accurate restorations. One would have to agree that '40 Fords just don't get restored "any more-better" than a Kubarth restoration. It's obvious that the guy just "feels" the depth of ALL that it takes to finally send one of his RE-creations out the door. Keeping all of this in mind, it's easy to forget just how many "perfectly finished" coupes and convertibles that Kube has returned to "better than factory" finish. But since this is the first pick-up that Mike has done, and realizing that certainly no other '40 pick-up was ever built in a Ford factory to this degree of absolute perfection, I wonder if Kube (or anyone else) has come to the realization that this most-certainly MUST be the "MOST-PERFECTLY ASSEMBLED" 1940 Ford pick-up EVER found on Planet Earth? 'Tis a thing of beauty, for sure! DD

As always, you have finished some very impressive work. One of my favorite pictures would be about 2 pages back with the right rear tire off showing how detailed it is in an area that most will never see. Thank you for sharing with us.

I've known for some time that you and I share some of the same delights. Like you, I love detail - especially the chassis. I prefer to paint these vehicles in color to show that detail off. While I have done black cars, they just don't get me as excited as cars of color. Looking beneath a colored car and seeing the black frame against the colored floor pans just does something to satisfy my OCD a little.

This truck required more time than I'd figured just to get the bed (bottom) as detailed as I wanted. As many know, Ford dipped the wood pieces in a mixture that caused the wood to turn for the most part - black. During the process of painting the bed (assembly line) overspray upon the wood was inevitable and hardly discouraged.
As you can see in one of the photos herein attached, I could not bring myself to do that.

I don't think the over-restore police will show up for that. Looks good on top. Might as well look good on the bottom too.

Great, great work - super craftsmanship but then again, we've all see your work before and know what you are about. I just love 40-41 pickups and I totally get the "detail" of contrasting color combo - makes things pop. I call it paint and detail ....
