RPU streached quarter panels
Hi Guys,
Have anyone fitted stretched quarter panels on a RPU? Are they available from the regular parts dealers? Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
I have tried to find my Howell's catalogue to check first but can't seem to find it right now, but check with them in TX, I know they make stretched 1/4's for the CC Pickups.
Also try Brookville or an ebay seller called "ammuscle" in OH and another ebay seller called "roadsteruteinc" in CA. Otherwise, I've seen to phaeton center pillars welded together or a couple of hand made sheet metal examples. One home made item had a belt line made from flat bar and welded ti the top outer of the sheet metal, not what I'd do but it did work... |

Why do you not get ahold of Flop. He will most likely know who to direct you to or might be able to make them for you

Howells discontinued the stretched 1/4 panels I was told, but Brookville Roadster still has them...I think they must be gold plated though. lol

I'll follow up on these leads. Don't know if I will actually go ahead and stretch my RPU as much as 6 inches. I think 3" would be enough for me and won't be as obvious.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
Yes, 6" is way too much it will look wrong proportion wise.
Two to three inches should work. I added 2" to a CC Pickup cab and with a little trickery managed to be able to use the same side aprons and running boards. When you change one thing several others can be affected... |

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
One would guess that the top would also need to modified.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
If you are stretching the cab to get more leg room, I think lengthening the doors would be better as you would also increase the ease of entry & exit. The older I get the smaller the access is to my '28 roadster pickup.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
TKS again Gents,
V8, yes, I also thought 6 would look odd. I have already shaved my backrest to a minimum and I agree 2 to 3 max. Mike and Spoke, My RPU didnt have a top and I had to make one myself. First the frame and then the canvas pattern, so maybe I would be able to improve on the next one. Maybe even make a fold down, I can modify the plans Ive got. Unfortunately we don't have 28-29 Roadster tops lying around in Africa. Make one or go without. Hi Ray, Yep, someone around here in ZA making replacement quarters, also suggested I stretch the doors iso the quarters. At first I though it a silly idea, but I agree that it is a feasible option. TKS, i'll keep it in mind.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
Here's a side view of a '29 CCPU with 6-1/2" stretched corners. Since there is a new flatbed, the aprons didn't need to be modified. I bought these Howell cab corners and upper and lower back panels through Bert's in Denver. Fit and finish were spot on.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
Good point about the doors being lengthened, especially if you happen to have big feet.
Can be quite awkward getting in and out of those soft top vehicles... |

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
Reminds me of a friend, on his '29 CCPU, he cut out the raised area at the upper cab area & installed 1/4 windows. Looks REALLY NEAT!

Howell's makes crap. Don't waste you money on anything they make. Customer Service is not in their vocabulary.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
Hi Dennis,
Yep, your stretched cab CCPU looks great, and as Bill says, a 1/4 window would also look nice. But I quite like the louvers. However, I still think 6" is too much on a RPU, 2 to 2.5 would be a subtle change and most people would not ever notice. Except for the 6 ft driver.

Re: RPU streached quarter panels
I have seen quite a few stretched 6" with shorter beds and they look OK only when next to a standard RPU do really notice the difference
mine is standard and I wish I had the extra room for the longer trips |
