Default Spark advance

I thought I had the A timed correctly, But it now starts best with the spark lever all the way down, advanced, am I correct that it should be all the way up, retarded to start, help please!

Yes, PO, the lever should be all the way up when you start. Once you do get it started, where is the lever when the car is running at its best. Does the engine want to rev out or does it feel sluggish and reluctant to rev? If it is the latter, I think your timing is retarded.
Check the timing.

It sounds like you didn't remove the slack slop when you timed. The distributor shaft slop should be turned clockwise to put the shaft in the actual running position for timing.

The cam screw should hold the distributor cam tight. Maybe it slipped because the screw wasn't tight or is missing the lock washer.
