Bill, if you are an employee at a Pawn Shop, does that qualify you as a Pawnee No pawn intended.

Good synonyms would be counterfeit, knock-off, look-a-like, fake etc.
so getting gypped meant paying for the real deal and getting a knock-off.
Interesting history, I knew getting gypped was getting ripped off or not getting full value, thought that it might be an acronym for something. Now I know where it came from Thanks

Thanks for the responses.
Jim / Alabam : I have this Chicago Branch Letter on File. I picked it up years ago from a FORD dealer in Western Indiana.
Tom Wesenberg : I think FORD meant for these to be "put to a good use" and to be used for a display of sorts, or where they would see limited usage and/or not be subjected to heavy loading. We probably will never know what his definition of "FOR EXPERIMENTAL AND MANUFACTURING PURPOSES" really meant. But the Letter is clear "on what they SHOULD NOT be used for".
On The Block markings: The "S" marking "probably stood for "SPECIAL". I would like to think (but do not really know) that some of these engines were actually sold, and found their way back into the public's hands.
