Default LED Flasher

Has anyone converted to LED taillights and replaced the flasher to make them work? If so, can you give me the info on the flasher you used such as number or model? I have a 2 prong unit. Napa guys say that they are not electricians so they have no idea which one I need. It is my understanding that just because it says "electronic" doesn't mean they will work with LEDs.

Apparently I need a two prong electronic unit with a ground pigtail or use a 3 prong unit and make up a pigtail to be able to ground the 3rd spade?????

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The third prong on most flashers is for the instrument panel ("pilot") light, not a ground. Any truly electronic flasher shouldn't depend on current draw from the taillights. I've seen ones at AutoZone for $10.

I used the clear plastic electronic replacements [$8.00 --Autozone] for my conversions but I kept a 1157 bulb in the front parklights. If everything is LED, simply wire a small resister or light bulb in the circuit anywhere so at least some amperage will make the blinker work. I used this on my '51 Merc, '52 Vicky, '48 Chevy Conv. and '46 Ford cpe.....Sam

I used an old 6volt flasher and an extra bulb in line to draw enough current to make the flasher work since the LED's don't draw much. I have a stock wiring system on my truck. I added 2 Led brake and turn bars for the rear windows to go along with the stock lights on the rear of the truck. Works fine.

I soldered a 1 ohm resister parallel in the circuit with the one bulb I wanted to flash to get the thermal, non-electronic flasher to work.

I just checked the specs on some electronic flashers and they have no minimum load. So, if you're flashing just LED's with an electronic flasher, you don't need to add a load resistor.

What I haven't found is an electronic flasher for 6 volts for positive ground (I found one for negative ground.) If anyone knows where to get one let me know.

Thanks to all of you.
I have a 12v system with the small chrome bodied lights hidden behind my grill for front turn and park lights. They probably don't use much amperage each. I replace the taillights with the LED lights designed for the 40 ford.

I just ordered three 2 prong with pigtail units for my 40, my 24T and a spare. I find if I have a spare, I rarely need to use them. lol

I will let you know how they work when I get it set up.

Merry Christmas
