Default 1930-31 Steering Wheel installation

Greetings, can anyone tell me how to install a steering wheel all the way on the steering shaft? I can only get it in a few turns on the hex nut not, allowing the light /horn shaft to set in fully place. Thanks to all that can help.

Welcome Aboard. Your in the right place for info. A couple of things to check. Make sure the wheel fits the spine or shaft properly. If it's new steering wheel it could be under size. Also check and see if the key is the right size. The slots in the new wheels can be to small as well. If that is all good then you can slip a deep socket over the steering wheel body and give it a couple of taps to seat the wheel on the shaft and see where you are. The nut usually just comes flush with the shaft. Also if your using a new Horn rod they can be the wrong size as well. Sometimes to long, sometimes to short. Also check and make sure that the clip at the bottom fits the shaft properly and the clip will fit inside the two finger actuator at the bottom as well. You can tell I love aftermarket parts.

Check the taper and threads for burrs or damage. dry fit without the key and you should be able to find the problem.

Following on Tinbashers thoughts, I put a new wheel on my roadster recently and found there was a lot of mold plastic “spillover” fouling the splines. I had to remove it (with an exacto knife) before the wheel would seat fully.

I purchased a new steering wheel and "key" from a well known Model A vendor, however when attempting to install the new steering wheel found that the new key was too thick to properly fit in the key way. Ended up reusing the old key and everything when on just fine.

Sometimes a little touch up with a file or some such will solve the problem .

Marshall, thanks for your suggestion. Once I saw that the mast jacket wasn't properly seated, I was able to get it in place and all is good! Thanks for the detailed description of how to solve this problem.

Thanks,
Tony

The threads are fragile so use care. When they break off

Also, don't forget to "clock" the steering wheel when you install it so that you can see the gauges easily.

The first sentence in the first post at the link may help explain.

I believe Marshall got tired of being criticized unfairly by some people on this board, that’s why he sends private messages. I don’t blame him for not wanting to have to endlessly justify his posts.
