Default Step plate or not??

Which is better. No step plate or running board with step plates. Also anyone have measurement on exactly where I would mount the plates?

Stepping on the running board and swivelling to sit wears a spot on the rubber running board surface. Find that spot and put the step plate there. I have a set original from dealer on my A and like them. Also kind of unique. You can see them on my avatar. To find placement, put some old absorbent (oil dry) on the ground and grind it under the soles of your shoes, then get in and out a few times. It'll leave a mark that is easy to see and easily cleaned.

My Town Sedan has step plates but I never use them. I step over the running board with my right foot, then sit down and swing in my left foot when entering the car.

They get in the way when you carry sacks of cement on the runningboards

Were the pickups also fitted with these step plates?

I have had them on my Tudor for the last fifty years and they did not save the rubber mat from rotting from old age but I still like them. Woody

Running board step plates were an accessory, sometimes dealer installed. As to the front to back location put them where you would normally step. As to locating them near the running board trim or back to the splash apron remember that in the 1930's many roads were unpaved and the raised portion of the rear of step plate was to scrape mud or dirt from your shoes, so mount them as if you needed to use the boot scraper feature.

I don't like step plates !!!!!!! I feel that step plates and other like do-dads distracts from the natural beauty of the model A . I usually step over the running boards when entering . Step plates mostly ruin the running boards because of the holes that have to be drilled . While I could fix the holes and install new matting , I avoid running boards that have been drilled , when they show up at swap meets .

Pickups were not equipped with step plates from the factory, not sure if they were a dealer option.

It comes down to this: if you like them put them on. It's your car. They are period correct because some dealers put them in. Mine are dealer step plates.

Chief, my Dad, put them backwards to scrape mud off his shoes.

They can be installed on the underside of the running board to protect the RB from mud thrown up by the wheels.

Not that I have done that either. But the rationale of installation is the same.

If you have worn holes in your running boards (trucks with the diamond emboss are particularly prone) then the underside plates keep water from being thrown through the holes and wetting your bags of cement.

I would take them off but, then I need to do something to deal with the holes! I have one running board that is getting borderline serviceable! When that running board gets replaced the step plates are gone!

My Tudor came with step plates. They are located 11 3/4 inches from front edge of the running board. and that leaves 18 3/4 inches from the rear edge. Set back 3/4 inch from side edge.
If you want them, put them on...Enjoy YOUR adventure, Chap.
