Take a photo of your number. I do that on all of mine that way you have it for future questions. Might save a headache down the line

In regard to the above "Serial Number Plate", I will reiterate "JSeery" 's words of caution.

In addition, I'm not sure what the point of adding one would be. The would have no possible value as far as varifing the serial number unless it was added by the state. Looks to me you would just be inviting potenitual issues.

after reading all these great posts i looked again for my # on my 39. i stripped the paint (several layers) from left frame rail from firewall to other end, had to remove horns and brake line. found the # in the last place i stripped above crossmember. i then wire brushed the area as there was rust under all that paint. i then used a scotchbrite wheel and can make out all but 2 #s. this was done without any front sheetmetal on car and will be a lot harder on a complete car

A caution about using the numbers stamped into the trans.. Most old cars have had at least one trans replacement during it's life, therefore, the number would be wrong, in the good ole days nobody paid any attention to serial numbers, the only time the question came up was if the vehicle was relocated to another state..
During the 66 years I have owned my '36 I have relocated it to four different states, never a problem.
My brother has a '37 Ford 4dr which he bought while living in CA during the mid '70's. My brother decided to move back to Idaho after living in CA for twenty-eight years. When he had the serial number varified in Idaho they found that the serial number stamped into the frame adjacent to the steering gears did not match the title/registration.. OOpp's

Thanks, i am going to inquire from my DMV and Troop as to whether or not that is legal. It is cool looking though and Im sure make things a lot easier to identify. After looking at a suggested website(vanpeltsales.com) I also found specific locations for VIN stamping.

Keep us updated on what you find out. Might even be able to get paperwork from the DMV that they verify the numbers.
